al-Mafarid li Abi Yala al-Mawsili (المفاريد لأبي يعلى الموصلي), also known as al-Mafarid 'an Rasul Allah (المفاريد عن رسول الله ﷺ, "Singular Transmissions from the Messenger of Allah"), is a specialized hadith work by the hadith master Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili (210–307 AH / 825–919 CE) dedicated to solitary narrations and individual transmission lines.

Subject and Genre

The work belongs to the hadith genre devoted to tafarrud and al-afrad (solitary transmissions and unique narrators), alongside specialized compilations such as al-Tafarrud by Abu Dawud, al-Afrad by al-Daraqutni, and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat by al-Tabarani. In this text, Abu Ya'la documented reports transmitted through isolated chains or solitary transmitters, providing complete isnads for each narration.

Transmission and Reception

Later hadith scholars and biographers frequently cited al-Mafarid to trace rare reports and verify narrator identities. Ibn al-Athir transmitted narrations through it in his biographical dictionary Usd al-Ghabah, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani cited it in works such as al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah. Scholars also utilized Abu Ya'la's chains in al-Mafarid to resolve transmission discrepancies found in his larger collection, al-Musnad.

Printed Edition

The book was edited by Abdullah ibn Yusuf al-Juday' and published in a single volume by Maktabat Dar al-Aqsa in Kuwait in 1405 AH / 1985 CE. The editor noted that this printed edition was based on a truncated manuscript (nuskha mabturah), which accounts for certain reports quoted from al-Mafarid in classical sources (such as al-Isabah) being absent from the published text.
