al-Maakhidh ala Shurrah Diwan Abi al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi (Strictures on the Commentators of the Diwan of Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi) is a critical treatise on Arabic poetry and literary commentary composed by the grammarian and man of letters Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Ma'qil al-Azdi al-Muhallabi (567–644 AH / 1171–1246 CE) . The book examines, evaluates, and corrects interpretations advanced by five major classical commentators on the collected poems of Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi (303–354 AH / 915–965 CE) .

Purpose and Scope

Al-Muhallabi opens the work by noting the enduring prominence of al-Mutanabbi’s verse across literate society, the widespread circulation of his proverbs, and the persistent efforts of scholars to unpack his intricate meanings . Recognizing that penetrating the depth of such poetry requires mastery of lexical nuances, syntactic analysis, and rhetorical subtlety, al-Muhallabi undertook a systematic scrutiny of how earlier scholars had glossed these poems . He identifies where previous commentators misconstrued the poet's intent, offered forced syntactic solutions, or misjudged rhetorical imagery .

Structure and Content

The work is organized into distinct divisions, each dedicated to refuting or refining the analysis of a specific commentator:

  • Critiques of Ibn Jinni: Focusing on his commentary al-Fasr. Al-Muhallabi begins with Ibn Jinni because he was the earliest to author a full commentary and transcribe oral reports directly from al-Mutanabbi, though al-Muhallabi criticizes him for dwelling extensively on grammatical citations while being overly brief on poetic meanings .
  • Critiques of Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri: Addressing his commentary entitled al-Lami al-Azizi .
  • Critiques of Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Ali al-Tibrizi: Addressing his commentary entitled al-Mawdih .
  • Critiques of Abu al-Yumn al-Kindi: Reviewing his explanations of al-Mutanabbi's lines .
  • Critiques of Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi: Examining his widely used commentary on the Diwan .

In each section, al-Muhallabi quotes the commentator's gloss, identifies its analytical or linguistic shortcoming, and advances what he considers the correct interpretation or a more plausible alternative reading .

Manuscripts and Publication

A major manuscript of the work is preserved at the Feyzullah Efendi Library in Istanbul (MS 1748), consisting of 276 folios, where modern scholar Abd al-Aziz al-Maymani appraised it as a significant work of literary criticism . Photographic copies of the separate treatises are also held at King Saud University in Riyadh, reproduced from the Arif Hikmat Library in Medina . The portion containing al-Muhallabi's critiques of Abu al-Yumn al-Kindi was edited by Hilal Naji and published in the Iraqi journal al-Mawrid in 1397 AH / 1977 CE .
