al-Luma fi Asbab Wurud al-Hadith (Arabic: اللمع في أسباب ورود الحديث, lit. 'The Gleams Concerning the Occasions of the Hadith's Pronouncement') is a specialized work on hadith studies by the Egyptian Shafi'i scholar Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE) dedicated to identifying the context and historical occasions (asbab al-wurud) surrounding prophetic narrations.

Background and Purpose

In the treatise's preface, al-Suyuti explains that knowledge of the causes and occasions of hadiths is a distinct branch of hadith sciences analogous to the study of the occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) for the Quran, on which he had previously authored his compendium Lubab al-Nuqul fi Asbab al-Nuzul. He observed that while early scholars had composed treatises on the occasions of hadith, their texts were largely unavailable, though their existence was recorded in biographical literature and cited by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his commentary on Nukhbat al-Fikar.

Al-Suyuti also cited Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini in Mahasin al-Istilah (who enumerated this field as the sixty-ninth branch of hadith science) and Ibn Daqiq al-Id in Sharh al-Umdah to underscore the significance of documenting circumstances where a hadith's context was not explicitly preserved across all transmission chains. Consequently, al-Suyuti sought to gather narrations from primary hadith collections and compile their historical causes into a single text.

Structure and Scope

The work is organized topically according to standard jurisprudence headings (abwab), opening with the chapter on purification (Bab al-Taharah). Under each entry, al-Suyuti first records a prophetic text with its primary transmitters and follows it with the specific incident, question, or background circumstance that prompted its utterance.

Al-Suyuti died before completing his intended scope for the book, leaving behind an unfinished initial portion containing around one hundred hadiths. A colophon added by his student Muhammad ibn Ali al-Dawudi notes that the surviving material represented the final state found in the author's handwriting, cut short by his death.

Impact and Manuscripts

Al-Suyuti's draft served as the primary reference point for later scholars addressing this specific subdiscipline. Ibn Hamza al-Husayni noted that he could find no other standalone work on the subject in his era besides al-Suyuti's partial text, which prompted him to compose his broader alphabetical compilation al-Bayan wa-l-Ta'rif fi Asbab Wurud al-Hadith al-Sharif.

Manuscripts of al-Luma include a copy penned by al-Dawudi preserved at the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya, Tal'at collection) and a copy held at the al-Azhar Library. The work has been printed under titles including Asbab Wurud al-Hadith aw al-Luma fi Asbab Wurud al-Hadith.
