al-Lubab fi al-Jam‘ bayn al-Sunna wa al-Kitab (The Core in Reconciling the Sunnah and the Book) is a legal work by the Hanafi jurist and hadith scholar Ali ibn Zakariyya al-Manbiji (d. 686 AH / 1287 CE) that compiles legal evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah arranged according to the thematic chapters of Islamic jurisprudence.

Content and Method

The work begins with the praise of God: الحمد لله على آلائه ونعمائه ("Praise be to God for His bounties and favors"). Al-Manbiji structured the book according to the standard order of jurisprudence (tartib al-fiqh), organizing legal rulings and their proofs across the thematic divisions used by the legal schools (abwab fiqh al-madhahib).

The Hanafi biographer Ibn Qutlubugha commended al-Manbiji's execution of the work, noting that he compiled it across the chapters of comparative jurisprudence with excellence and substantial benefit.

Transmission and Reception

The book was transmitted directly from the author by his son, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Manbiji, who studied it under his father, later taught in Jerusalem, and subsequently resided in Cairo in 736 AH.

Manuscripts and Publication

Several classical manuscript copies of the work are preserved in libraries worldwide, including an early copy in Qom dated to 684 AH (transcribed during the author's lifetime), as well as copies in Istanbul at the Ahmet III Library (dated 733 AH), the Vahid Paşa Library (dated 749 AH), the Emanet Hazinesi collection, and the Qadiriyya Library in Baghdad.

The text was published in Jeddah in 1403 AH in two volumes, and was later edited by Muhammad Fadl Abd al-Aziz al-Murad and published jointly by Dar al-Qalam in Damascus and al-Dar al-Shamiyya in Beirut.
