al-Lāmiʿ al-Ṣabīḥ bi-Sharḥ al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ (The Radiant Dawn in Commentating the Authentic Collection) is an extensive commentary on al-Bukhari’s hadith collection Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, authored by the Shafi'i jurist and scholar Shams al-Din al-Barmawi (763–831 AH / 1362–1428 CE; also reported d. 837 AH) .

Title and Composition

The author designated the work as al-Lāmiʿ al-Ṣabīḥ bi-Sharḥ al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ in his introduction, though manuscripts and bibliographic sources alternately cite it with the prepositions fī (al-Lāmiʿ al-Ṣabīḥ fī Sharḥ al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ) or ʿalā (al-Lāmiʿ al-Ṣabīḥ ʿalā al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ) .

Al-Barmawi left the commentary as a draft during his lifetime; the work was only transcribed into a clean fair copy (tubuyyiḍa) after his death . In its original manuscript circulation, it spanned four volumes .

Sources and Methodology

The core foundation of al-Lāmiʿ al-Ṣabīḥ rests upon the synthesization and abridgment of two prominent earlier commentaries on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: al-Kawākib al-Darārī by Shams al-Din al-Kirmani and the commentary of Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi . Al-Barmawi also drew upon the introductory volume of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's commentary (Muqaddimat Fatḥ al-Bārī / Hady al-Sārī) .

In constructing his commentary, al-Barmawi adopted a structured approach:

  • Eliminating excessive repetition found across his primary source works .
  • Correcting slips and challenging conclusions he deemed weak or contrary to the preferred view across hadith critique, jurisprudence, and Arabic philology .
  • Explaining transmission variants, difficult vocalizations, grammatical parsing, and the juristic reasoning behind al-Bukhari's chapter headings .

Reception and Influence

Composed prior to the widely circulated commentaries of Badr al-Din al-Ayni (ʿUmdat al-Qārī) and Shihab al-Din al-Qastallani (Irshād al-Sārī), al-Lāmiʿ al-Sabīḥ served as an essential reference for later scholars, who frequently cited al-Barmawi's choices, agreements, and divergences from al-Kirmani . Abu Dharr Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Sibt al-Halabi (d. 884 AH) utilized al-Barmawi's commentary as a primary pillar for his own work, al-Tawḍīḥ li-l-Awhām al-Wāqiʿa fī al-Ṣaḥīḥ .

Modern Publication

The work was edited from four surviving manuscript copies—including witnesses preserved in the Feyzullah and Fatih Pasha collections in Turkey—by a team of researchers supervised by Nur al-Din Talib, and published in multi-volume format by Dar al-Nawadir and al-Raqeem in 1433 AH / 2012 CE .
