Al-Laali al-Masnua fi al-Ahadith al-Mawdua (The Manufactured Pearls Among Fabricated Hadiths) is a specialized hadith work by the Egyptian scholar Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE), composed as an abridgment and critical review of Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi's major compilation on forged traditions, Kitab al-Mawdu'at .
Purpose and Background
In his introduction, al-Suyuti noted that warning against fabricated and concocted hadiths attributed to the Prophet is among the essential obligations of the faith . While acknowledging Ibn al-Jawzi's effort in assembling a comprehensive reference, al-Suyuti pointed out—aligning with earlier hadith masters—that Ibn al-Jawzi had included many weak (da'if) hadiths that did not reach the level of outright forgery (wad'), as well as fair (hasan) and even authentic (sahih) narrations . This prompted al-Suyuti to select, abridge, and re-examine the material to rectify these overextensions .
Method and Sources
In structuring and evaluating the narrations, al-Suyuti adopted a defined critical method:
- Transmission and Source Citation: He cited each hadith directly from the primary collections Ibn al-Jawzi had used—such as Tarikh Baghdad by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, the works of al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, al-Kamil by Ibn Adi, al-Du'afa' by al-Uqayli, Ibn Hibban, al-Azdi, al-Afrad by al-Daraqutni, and Hilyat al-Awliya' by Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani—retaining their original transmission chains while dropping Ibn al-Jawzi's intermediary isnad to those authors .
- Quotation and Commentary: He provided Ibn al-Jawzi’s original text and verdict on each narration, followed by his own critical remarks wherever Ibn al-Jawzi's judgment was questionable . Al-Suyuti marked the start of his additions with the word qultu ("I said") and concluded them with wa-Allahu ta'ala a'lam ("and God Almighty knows best") .
- Reference to Earlier Authorities: He tracked the analyses of later hadith masters, drawing heavily on the findings of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani across his various works .
- Symbolic Notation: He used the Arabic letter jim (ج) as a symbol next to reports also recorded by Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ibrahim al-Jawzaqani, indicating concord between compilers that the narration was indeed fabricated .
Related Works and Reception
Al-Suyuti supplemented Al-Laali al-Masnua with a continuation titled Dhayl al-Laali al-Masnua (also referred to as Ziyadat al-Mawdu'at), in which he compiled fabricated traditions that Ibn al-Jawzi had omitted . He also produced Al-Nukat al-Badi'at, dedicated specifically to the majority of his critical emendations against Ibn al-Jawzi .
The book became a primary reference in later fabrication literature. Ibn Iraq (d. 963 AH) drew upon Al-Laali al-Masnua, its Dhayl, and Al-Nukat al-Badi'at when compiling his synthesis Tanzih al-Shariah al-Marfuah . An abridgment of al-Suyuti's work was also composed by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Harishi al-Fasi (d. 1143 AH) . The text has been published in modern editions, including printings in Egypt and Beirut .
