al-Laali (also documented as al-Laʾali fi Khutab al-Mawaʿiz, "The Pearls in Admonitory Sermons") is a compilation of homiletic addresses composed by the Baghdad-born Hanbali scholar and preacher Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH / 1201 CE) .
Composition and Purpose
The work comprises a selection of extemporaneous sermons that Ibn al-Jawzi delivered during his public preaching sessions (majalis al-waʿz). These addresses were improvised on the spot in response to verses of the Quran recited before him by attendees . Listeners in the assembly recorded his spoken words in writing, after which Ibn al-Jawzi gathered these transcriptions from those who had taken notes and organized them into a single volume .
Structure and Method
The text is arranged alphabetically according to the letters of the Arabic alphabet (huruf al-muʿjam) . The book opens with the formula: "Praise be to God for His everlasting favor, and blessings upon His Prophet Ahmad..." (الحمد لله على الإنعام السرمد، والصلاة على نبيه أحمد) .
Transmission and Cataloging
The treatise is listed under the title al-Laʾali fi Khutab al-Mawaʿiz in classical bibliographical compendia, including Hajji Khalifa's Kashf al-zunun and Ismaʿil Pasha al-Babani's Hadiyyat al-ʿarifin . Manuscript copies of the text have been preserved across multiple manuscript collections, including the Fatih collection in Istanbul .
