al-Khamis min al-Wakhshiyyat (The Fifth Part of al-Wakhshiyyat) is a hadith tract compiled by the Hadith scholar Abu Ali al-Wakhshi (d. 471 AH / 1078–1079 CE), consisting of selections he chose from the narrations of Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani .

Background and Compilation

The parent work, known as al-Wakhshiyyat, consists of five parts (ajza') that Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Balkhi al-Wakhshi selected (intiqa') from the hadith transmissions of the scholar Abu Nu'aym Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Isbahani . Al-Wakhshi heard and compiled these narrations from Abu Nu'aym in Isfahan, with the Fifth Part recording narrations dated to Jumada al-Akhira 426 AH .

Transmission and Preservation

The transmission (riwaya) of this fifth part is documented through intermediate transmitters from Abu Nu'aym:

  • Narrated from Abu Nu'aym by the reciter Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Haddad .
  • Transmitted from al-Haddad by Abu Sa'id Khalil ibn Abi al-Raja' ibn Abi al-Fath al-Zarani .
  • Transmitted from al-Zarani by Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi .

While the original compilation encompassed five volumes, only the second and fifth parts are extant in manuscript form in the Umariyya collections preserved at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 105) .

Contents

The fifth part contains seventy-five numbered prophetic traditions transmitted through Abu Nu'aym's teachers—such as Abd Allah ibn Ja'far ibn Faris, al-Tabarani, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Anbari, and Abu Ali ibn al-Sawwaf . The texts cover various subjects, including ethical conduct, asceticism (zuhd), descriptions of the afterlife, prayers, repentance, and sincere intention, concluding with several lines of moral poetry recited by Abd Allah ibn Ja'far al-Jabiri .
