al-Kawthar al-Jari ila Riyad Ahadith al-Bukhari (The Flowing Abundance to the Gardens of al-Bukhari's Hadiths) is an intermediate-length commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari composed by the scholar Ahmad ibn Isma'il al-Kurani (d. 893 AH / 1488 CE).
Composition and Overview
The work is also referenced in biographical and bibliographical literature under the title al-Kawthar al-Jari 'ala Riyad al-Bukhari. Al-Kurani completed its composition in the city of Edirne in Jumada al-Ula 874 AH (1469 CE). The commentary begins with the opening praise: «الحمد لله الذي أوقد من مشكاة الشهادة...» ("Praise be to God, who kindled from the niche of testimony...").
Method and Content
Al-Kurani introduced his commentary with a preliminary treatise covering a concise overview of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ biography, followed by the virtues and merits of al-Bukhari and his collection. Throughout the text, the author addresses difficult and obscure linguistic expressions (mushkil al-lughat) and provides precise vocalization and identification for narrator names where ambiguity or confusion might arise.
In his critical analysis, al-Kurani actively evaluates earlier commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari, frequently responding to and disputing positions advanced by Shams al-Din al-Kirmani in al-Kawakib al-Darari and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari.
Publication
The work has been edited by Ahmad 'Izzu 'Inayah and published in eleven volumes by Mu'assasat al-Tarikh al-'Arabi in Beirut (1429 AH / 2008 CE).
