al-Juz al-Thalith min Fawaid Abi Ali al-Sawwaf

al-Juz’ al-Thalith min Fawa’id Abi ‘Ali al-Sawwaf (The Third Part of the Beneficial Traditions of Abu ‘Ali al-Sawwaf) is a hadith tract containing transmissions of the hadith scholar Ibn al-Sawwaf (d. 359 AH / 970 CE), selected (intiqa’) by the hadith master al-Daraqutni .

Transmission and Content

The text comprises a selection of hadiths transmitted by Abu ‘Ali Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Sawwaf from his teachers, including ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Bishr ibn Musa, Ishaq ibn al-Hasan al-Harbi, Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Hulwani, Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Nadr, Muhammad ibn Isma‘il al-Sulami, ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Shawarib, and Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah . The narrated reports cover diverse subjects, including eschatological matters such as the questioning in the grave and descriptions of the afterlife, ritual prayer and etiquette, ethical conduct, and the virtues of the Prophet's companions .

The surviving line of transmission (riwayah) preserved on the manuscript passes from Abu ‘Ali al-Sawwaf through Abu Nu‘aym al-Isfahani . From Abu Nu‘aym, it was conveyed by Abu ‘Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad and Abu Tahir ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad al-Sabbagh al-Dashti, both of whom transmitted it to the female scholar Umm Hani’ ‘Afifah bint Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Farfaniyyah—by direct audition from al-Sabbagh and through formal authorization (ijazah) from al-Haddad .

Manuscripts and Publication

The complete manuscript of the work contains 168 hadiths . The text was published in Riyadh by Dar al-‘Asimah under the editorship of Mahmud al-Haddad; however, this printed edition is defective and contains only 35 hadiths, having omitted 133 hadiths following the third report .
