al-Juz' al-Rabi' min al-Thaqafiyat (The Fourth Part of the Thaqafiyyat), also known as al-Juz' al-Rabi' min al-Fawa'id al-'Awali al-Muntaqah, is a Hadith tract compiled by the Isfahan-based traditionist al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl al-Thaqafi (397–489 AH / 1007–1096 CE) . It brings together select transmissions with elevated chains of transmission (isnad 'ali) derived from the compiler’s direct audition records .

Transmission and Structure

The work constitutes the fourth section of al-Thaqafi's broader ten-part collection titled al-Thaqafiyyat (or al-Fawa'id al-'Asharah) . The primary transmission of this text survived through the prominent scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi, who narrated it directly from al-Thaqafi . From al-Silafi, the text was transmitted downstream by scholars such as Taqi al-Din Abu Ali Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Awqi and Ja'far ibn Ali al-Hamadani .

A surviving manuscript of this fourth part is preserved within the Umariyyah collection (al-Majami' al-'Umariyyah) at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 22, no. 13) . Audition certificates (sama'at) recorded on the manuscript include a reading session held at the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus in Jumada al-Akhirah 784 AH before the scholar Fakhr al-Din Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Yusuf al-Ba'li, read by Ali ibn Mas'ud ibn Nafis al-Mawsili al-Halabi and documented by Muhammad ibn al-Mu'allim Ibrahim ibn Ghana'im al-Muhandis .

Content and Method

The tract presents individual prophetic traditions narrated through al-Thaqafi's teachers across Isfahan, Nishapur, and Baghdad, including Ibn Bishran, Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Jurjani, and Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Ibrahim al-Muzakki .

Al-Thaqafi routinely appends critical evaluations to the narrations, identifying the degree of elevation of his chains in relation to major canonical collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim . In several entries, he remarks on reaching parity with earlier authorities or having an isnad so short that it was "as if I heard it from the author of Sahih Muslim" .
