al-Juz al-Rabi min al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat al-Awali min Hadith al-Qutayi (The Fourth Part of the Selected High-Isnad Hadith Benefits from the Hadith of al-Qati'i) is a hadith booklet containing narrations transmitted by the Baghdadi hadith scholar Abu Bakr al-Qati'i (d. 368 AH / 979 CE) from his teachers, selected from his transmissions by the hadith master Umar ibn Jafar al-Basri (d. 357 AH / 968 CE) .

Compilation and Nature of the Work

The work belongs to the fawaid (hadith benefits) genre, specifically representing a selection (intiqa) of elevated narrations (awali) extracted from the broader hadith corpus of Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Jafar ibn Hamdan al-Qati'i . The selection was performed by the copyist and hadith master Abu Hafs Umar ibn Jafar ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Sari al-Warraq al-Basri, who frequently made selections from the transmissions of Baghdadi scholars for students of hadith . The broader collection of selected benefits transmitted from al-Qati'i is also referred to among hadith scholars as al-Qati'iyyat .

Transmission and Manuscript History

The primary transmission of the text from al-Qati'i passed through his student Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Jawhari, who was among the last of al-Qati'i's companions to transmit his narrations . From al-Jawhari, the work was transmitted by Abu Ghalib Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Banna, from whom it passed down through subsequent generations of hadith transmitters . In Andalusian bibliographical records, Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili documented receiving the five elevated parts (al-Khamsat al-Ajza al-Awali) selected by Umar al-Basri from al-Qati'i through chains going back to Abu Ghalib Ibn al-Banna from al-Jawhari .

Surviving manuscript copies record an unbroken chain of transmission from Abu Ghalib Ibn al-Banna through Abu Hafs Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Ma'mar ibn Tabarzad to Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi (Ibn al-Bukhari) . The manuscript preserves audition records (sama'), including that of Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Sayrafi al-Ansari, as well as an audition entry in the handwriting of Ibn al-Muhandis certifying that it was recited by Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jawzi al-Sibt before al-Mizzi, Ibn al-Bukhari al-Maqdisi, Ibn Shayban, and Zaynab bint Makki on Monday, 2 Safar 732 AH, in Damascus .
