al-Juz al-Awwal min Amali Abi Ishaq (The First Part of the Dictations of Abu Ishaq) is a short hadith collection dictated by the Abbasid hadith transmitter Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Samad al-Hashimi (d. 325 AH / 937 CE; another report gives 326 AH) .

Transmission and Nomenclature

The work consists of hadith transmissions dictated by Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Samad ibn Musa ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Abbas al-Hashimi al-Baghdadi . The text was transmitted from the author by Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Salt al-Mujabbir, and from him by Abu Abd Allah Malik ibn Ahmad ibn Ali al-Baniyasi . Owing to its transmission through al-Baniyasi, the work is frequently identified in hadith literature under the alternative title Juz al-Baniyasi (The Booklet of al-Baniyasi) .

Later scholars received and transmitted the text with elevated chains of narration (isnad 'ali), including al-Dhahabi, Ibn al-Mulaqqin, and Salah al-Din al-Ala'i .

Structure and Contents

This first part of the dictations comprises five dictation sessions (majalis) . The collection includes various prophetic traditions transmitted by al-Hashimi through family and regional isnads, including reports transmitted through his father Abd al-Samad ibn Musa, such as the hadith: أكرموا الشهود فإن الله عز وجل يستخرج بهم الحقوق ويدفع بهم الظلم ("Honor witnesses, for through them God Almighty extracts rights and averts injustice") .

Publication

The work was edited by Abd al-Rahim al-Qashqari and published by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh (1st edition, 1420 AH / 1999 CE) as part of the series Silsilat al-Ajza al-Mansukha .
