al-Jumal fi al-Nahw (The Sentences in Grammar) is an early grammatical treatise attributed to the foundational grammarian and lexicographer al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi (d. 170 AH / 786 CE; another report gives 175 AH / 791 CE) .

Attribution and Context

The attribution of the text to al-Khalil ibn Ahmad is widely contested; scholarly assessments treat it as falsely or incorrectly ascribed to him rather than being an authentic work from his pen . The title al-Jumal fi al-Nahw is shared by several later Arabic grammatical treatises, including the widely commented work by Abu al-Qasim al-Zajjaji (d. 339 AH) and that of Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani (d. 474 AH) .

Publication History

The treatise was edited and prepared for publication by Fakhr al-Din Qabawah . It was published in Beirut by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in its first edition (1405 AH / 1985 CE) and subsequent printings, and also issued by Dar al-Jil (fifth edition, 1415 AH / 1995 CE) .
