al-Jil al-Mawud bil-Nasr wal-Tamkin (The Promised Generation of Victory and Empowerment) is a contemporary treatise on faith-based education, spiritual reform, and Islamic revival by the Egyptian physician and author Magdi al-Hilali . Published in 1429 AH / 2008 CE, the work outlines the spiritual, moral, and practical qualities required for the Muslim community to attain divine assistance and civilizational empowerment .
Purpose and Scope
The book addresses the state of weakness, fragmentation, and humiliation facing the contemporary Muslim community, arguing that true revival cannot be achieved through superficial efforts or external assistance alone . Instead, al-Hilali posits that divine promises of vicegerency (istikhlaf) and empowerment (tamkin) on earth are bound to specific spiritual conditions and inner transformation . The author maintains that this divine promise is not restricted to a specific era or geographic location, but remains accessible to any generation that fulfills the requisite qualities, taking the generation of the Prophet's Sahaba (Companions) as its historical archetype .
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into an introduction, five thematic chapters, and a conclusion:
- Introduction: Discusses the Quranic promise of vicegerency for believers who combine faith with righteous deeds, emphasizing that revival requires the emergence of a generation embodying these criteria .
- Chapter One: Why the Promised Generation?! (Limadha al-Jil al-Mawud?!): Surveys the current crisis of the Muslim world and demonstrates the necessity of preparing an interconnected vanguard to awaken the community, guide it through periods of hardship, and steer it toward unity and civilizational renewal .
- Chapter Two: With the Characteristics of the Promised Generation (Ma'a Sifat al-Jil al-Mawud): Analyzes the minimum baseline of ten essential traits derived from the Quran that characterize this generation . These include absolute sincerity to God (al-ikhlas), humility (al-tawadu'), asceticism regarding worldly allurements (al-zuhd fi al-dunya), striving in God's cause (al-jihad), patience and steadfastness (al-sabr wal-thabat), and moderation and balance (al-i'tidal wal-tawazun), alongside an active awareness of one's time .
- Chapter Three: How to Realize the Characteristics of the Promised Generation? (Kayfa Tuhaqqiq Sifat al-Jil al-Mawud?): Outlines the methodology of spiritual cultivation, warning against attempting to force external virtuous behaviors prematurely without prior internal purification and foundational faith-building .
- Chapter Four: The First Generation and the Tools of Change (al-Jil al-Awwal wa-Adawat al-Taghyir): Examines the formation of the early Muslim community through three central pillars: the curriculum of transformation (the Quran), the supervising educator (the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), and the nurturing educational environment (al-mahadin al-tarbawiyya), historically represented by Dar al-Arqam .
- Chapter Five: Where Are We from the Promised Generation? (Ayna Nahnu min al-Jil al-Mawud?): Calls for individual and collective self-examination, urging believers to align their daily concerns, ambitions, and actions with the criteria of the promised generation and to coordinate their efforts collectively rather than operating as isolated individuals .
- Conclusion: Reasserts certainty in the restoration of Islamic strength and guidance, affirming that victory is granted by God when believers genuinely return to Him and His scripture .
