al-Jaws fi al-Mansub ila Daws (Traversing the Biographies of Those Attributed to Daws) is a biographical and genealogical dictionary by the modern Saudi scholar Marzouq bin Hiyas al-Zahrani, dedicated to individuals belonging or attributed to the Arabian tribe of Daws .

Background and Motivation

The author conceived the project after noticing the recurring appearance of the nisbas al-Zahrani, al-Dawsi, al-ʿAtaki, and al-Azdi in biographical sources and hadith chains . Although he initially postponed the endeavor, he returned to it more than twenty years later following his retirement from university work, starting the writing process in 1431 AH .

Al-Zahrani noted kinship as a personal incentive: his own tribe, Bani Hasan, descends from Aws ibn ʿAmir ibn Hufayn ibn al-Nimr ibn ʿUthman ibn Nasr ibn Zahran, whereas Daws stems from ʿAbd Allah ibn Zahran, the brother of Nasr ibn Zahran, with both branches uniting under their common ancestor Zahran ibn Ka'b . He also highlighted the unique religious virtue of Daws, citing the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ supplication for them: اللهم اهد دوسا وأت بهم ("O Allah, guide Daws and bring them"), as well as prophetic traditions honoring their status .

Scope and Method

The work compiles biographical notices of men and women historically affiliated with Daws ibn ʿUdthan ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Zahran, drawn from classical genealogical compendia and biographical dictionaries . It documents figures originating from the Sarawat Mountains and the adjacent Tihamah region, as well as those who settled across Oman, Kerman, Persia, Iraq, the Levant, Egypt, and al-Andalus .

The biographical entries in the book are organized alphabetically according to the Arabic alphabet . The author cross-references entries from this work in his other writings, including his commentary on Musnad al-Darimi and his dictionary Nisbah wa-Mansub .
