al-Jawhara al-Nayyira ala Mukhtasar al-Quduri (The Radiant Jewel on al-Quduri's Abridgment) is a legal commentary on Mukhtasar al-Quduri, authored by the Yemeni Hanafi jurist Abu Bakr al-Haddad (d. 800 AH / 1397–1398 CE) .
Composition and Scope
The base text, Mukhtasar al-Quduri, composed by Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Quduri (d. 428 AH), is one of the most widely circulated and relied-upon foundational manuals (mutun) of positive law (furu') in the Hanafi school .
Abu Bakr al-Haddad initially authored an extensive, multi-volume commentary on the Mukhtasar entitled al-Siraj al-Wahhaj al-muwaddih li-kulli talib muhtaj (The Blazing Lamp Clarifying for Every Needy Student) . He subsequently abridged al-Siraj al-Wahhaj into a more concise commentary, which he titled al-Jawhara al-Nayyira .
Method and Objectives
In the introduction to the work, al-Haddad stated that he compiled the commentary using concise phrasing and clear expressions that encompass extensive legal meanings and scholarly discussions . He explained that his objective was to render the text accessible and clear for students with limited understanding and modest aspirations .
Reception and Publication
The Ottoman scholar al-Birgivi reportedly classified the author's unabridged commentary, al-Siraj al-Wahhaj, among circulated texts deemed weak and unauthoritative (ghayr mu'tabara) .
al-Jawhara al-Nayyira was published in printed form in two volumes . Early printings include an Istanbul edition in 1301 AH, as well as an Egyptian edition published in 1322 AH (in two parts) with Abd al-Ghani al-Maydani's commentary al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab printed in its margins .
