al-Jannah wa al-Nar min al-Kitab wa al-Sunnah al-Mutahharah (Paradise and Hell in Light of the Purified Book and Sunnah) is an Islamic theological treatise on the eschatological realms of Paradise and Hellfire by Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'id ibn Ali ibn Wahf al-Qahtani (1403–1422 AH / 1983–2001 CE) .
Background and Editorial History
The treatise was originally prepared by Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'id al-Qahtani as a student research project . Following the author's death in Ramadan 1422 AH, his father, Sa'id ibn Ali ibn Wahf al-Qahtani, obtained the original handwritten text from the school's vice principal, Muhammad al-Awshan, and prepared it for publication .
The father's editorial process, completed on 26 Shawwal 1422 AH, entailed collating the text against the author's autograph manuscript, cross-referencing and grading all hadiths directly against classical hadith compendia, and placing additional notes in the margins . The work was published both as an independent monograph and as part of a compiled collection of the author's short writings (Majmu' Rasa'il Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'id ibn Ali ibn Wahf al-Qahtani) . It saw three separate print runs totaling 37,000 copies: the first printing comprised 7,000 copies, the second 10,000 copies, and the third 20,000 copies .
Structure and Content
The author stated that his aim in compiling the text was to encourage righteous actions that lead to Paradise and deter from sins that lead to Hellfire . The book is organized into two primary parts (abwab), subdivided into chapters and sections :
- Part One: Paradise and Hellfire: Definition and Clarification (al-Jannah wa al-Nar: Ta'rif wa Bayan)
- Chapter One: Defines the linguistic and technical meanings of Paradise and Hellfire and lists their various names drawn from scriptural texts .
- Chapter Two: Discusses the current existence and spatial locations of Paradise and Hellfire, presenting textual evidence affirming that both are created and existing at present .
- Part Two: The Bliss of the People of Paradise and the Torment of the People of Hell (Na'im Ahl al-Jannah wa 'Adhab Ahl al-Nar)
- Chapter One: Focuses on the bliss of Paradise, detailing both its spiritual aspects—foremost among them being Allah's perpetual pleasure with its inhabitants—and its physical dimensions, including descriptions of the rivers of Paradise, the hur al-'iyn (maidens of Paradise), dwellings such as tents, chambers, and palaces, as well as the food, drinks, and descriptions of the believers residing therein .
