al-Jami‘ li-‘Ulum al-Imam Ahmad – ‘Ulum al-Hadith (Arabic: الجامع لعلوم الإمام أحمد - علوم الحديث) is the specialized Hadith sciences division of the modern Hanbali encyclopedic compendium al-Jami‘ li-‘Ulum al-Imam Ahmad, which compiles the critical statements, terminology, and methodological rulings on Hadith transmitted from Ahmad ibn Hanbal (164–241 AH / 780–855 CE).
Compilation and Purpose
The work forms part of Mudawwanat al-Hanabilah, a large-scale project aimed at comprehensively gathering and categorizing the scholarly legacy and dispersed transmissions of Ahmad ibn Hanbal across various Islamic disciplines. The compilation and classification of the Hadith section were initially undertaken by Ibrahim al-Nahhas, after which it was reviewed, reorganized, and supplemented by a team of researchers at Dar al-Falah under the general supervision of Khalid al-Ribat and Sayyid ‘Izzat ‘Iyd.
The primary purpose of this section is to bring together Ahmad ibn Hanbal's critical evaluations, methodological principles, and verdicts on prophetic traditions and narrators, rather than reproducing the texts he narrated with his own chains of transmission, as the latter are the domain of his Musnad.
Sources and Methodology
The compilers extracted Ahmad ibn Hanbal's statements from a wide array of primary sources containing transmissions from his students, as well as classical Hadith literature. Major sources utilized include:
- Works on hidden defects (‘ilal) and biographical evaluation, such as al-‘Ilal wa-Ma‘rifat al-Rijal narrated by his son ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad, ‘Ilal al-Marwazi, and Ibn Qudamah's al-Muntakhab min ‘Ilal al-Khallal.
- Question-and-answer collections (masa'il) compiled by Ahmad's companions, including the Masa'il of ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad, Salih ibn Ahmad, Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, and Ishaq ibn Mansur al-Kawsaj.
- Classical Hadith and Sunan compendia that quote Ahmad's critical assessments, including Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan al-Nasa'i, Sunan al-Darimi, Sunan Ibn Majah, and the works of Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali.
In compiling this material, the editors arranged the statements thematically, standardized citations to authoritative editions, and adjusted cross-references to align with other parts of the encyclopedia, such as the jurisprudence (fiqh) sections.
Structure and Content
The Hadith section includes an introductory study on Ahmad ibn Hanbal's methodology in Hadith criticism and narrator evaluation (al-jarh wa-l-ta‘dil). Alongside the core classifications of Hadith terminology and defect analysis (‘ilal), the Dar al-Falah editorial team expanded the section by incorporating two complementary parts: Kitab Sharh al-Ahadith wa-l-Athar (explanations of prophetic traditions and narrations) and Kitab ‘Ulum al-Hadith (the formal disciplines of Hadith).
Publication
The work was published by Dar al-Falah li-l-Bahth al-‘Ilmi wa-Tahqiq al-Turath in Fayoum, Egypt, in its first edition in 1430 AH / 2009 CE.
