al-Jamiʿ li-ʿUlum al-Imam Ahmad – al-Rijal (الجامع لعلوم الإمام أحمد - قسم الرجال) is the biographical evaluation (rijal) section of the modern encyclopedic compendium al-Jamiʿ li-ʿUlum al-Imam Ahmad (Mudawwanat al-Hanabilah 1), compiled and authored by Khalid al-Ribat and Sayyid ʿIzzat ʿId with the participation of researchers at Dar al-Falah, first published in 1430 AH / 2009 CE . The work systematically gathers all surviving statements and critical assessments made by Ahmad ibn Hanbal (164–241 AH / 780–855 CE) concerning the Companions of the Prophet and narrators of hadith .

Scope and Structure

The Rijal section comprises four volumes within the overall encyclopedic series, spanning Volumes 16 through 19 :

  • Volume 16 (Part 1): Begins with the entries on the Companions (Tarajim al-Sahabah), followed by general hadith narrators arranged alphabetically starting with the letter Alif .
  • Volume 17 (Part 2): Continues the alphabetical sequence of narrators .
  • Volume 18 (Part 3): Covers narrators alphabetically from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith up to Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan .
  • Volume 19 (Part 4): Begins with Muhammad ibn ʿUqbah and concludes with the biographies of women narrators (Tarajim al-Nisaʾ) .

Method and Sources

The compendium arranges narrators under numbered biographical headings, presenting Ahmad ibn Hanbal's statements on transmitter reliability (al-jarh wa-al-ta'dil), narrator names, patronymics (kuna), lineage, and death dates .

Each report cites its specific classical transmission, drawing extensively from:

  • Works and question-and-answer collections transmitted by Ahmad's sons and students, including al-ʿIlal wa-Maʿrifat al-Rijal transmitted by Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Masa'il Salih transmitted by his son Salih, Masa'il Harb transmitted by Harb al-Kirmani, and Su'alat Abi Dawud by Abu Dawud al-Sijistani .
  • Ahmad's treatise al-Asami wa-al-Kuna .
  • Classical hadith biographical and historical works that preserve Ahmad's direct statements, such as Tarikh Ibn Abi Khaythamah, Muʿjam al-Sahabah by al-Baghawi, al-Jarh wa-al-Taʿdil by Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Muʾtalif wa-al-Mukhtalif by al-Daraqutni, and Tahdhib al-Kamal by al-Mizzi .

Footnotes provide hadith cross-references and bibliographic tracking for cited reports .
