al-Jami li Ulum al-Imam Ahmad - al-Muqaddimat (The Compendium of the Sciences of Imam Ahmad: The Introductions) is the first volume of the modern multi-volume scholarly encyclopedia al-Jami' li-'Ulum al-Imam Ahmad, compiled by a collaborative team of researchers at Dar al-Falah . It serves as the foundational, methodological, and historical introduction to the entire project, which gathers and classifies the transmitted rulings, legal questions (masa'il), theological statements, and scholarly judgments of Ahmad ibn Hanbal .

Purpose and Scope

The volume was prepared to outline the motivation, sources, and working criteria for compiling the dispersed oral and written transmissions of Ahmad ibn Hanbal into a unified reference work . The compilers note that the doctrines of the Hanbali school were deposited primarily across collections of questions and answers transmitted by Ahmad's pupils, following the early precedent of Abu Bakr al-Khallal, making an organized thematic corpus necessary for researchers . Beyond framing the specific encyclopedia, the volume offers a concise historical and analytical survey of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence .

Structure and Contents

The introductory volume contains several principal sections that delineate the encyclopedia's scheme and provide background on the Hanbali legal tradition :

  • Introduction to the Encyclopedia: An explanation of the project, its significance, and the scholarly need for a comprehensive compendium of Ahmad ibn Hanbal's statements .
  • Sources (al-Masadir): A documented bibliography of the classical and printed Hanbali texts, theological treatises, legal manuals, and biographical works utilized across the project .
  • Working Methodology (Manhaj al-'Amal): A statement of the criteria for selecting, attributing, and organizing narrations across the respective divisions of the work .
  • Survey of the Hanbali Madhhab: A concise overview covering the historical emergence of the school, its foundational principles (usul), its technical terminology (istilahat), and biographical overviews of its prominent authorities and their seminal writings .

The volume also outlines the layout of the broader encyclopedia, which is organized into seven core divisions: introductions (volume 1), biography and narrators from Ahmad (volume 2), creed ('aqida, volumes 3–4), jurisprudence (fiqh, volumes 5–13), Hadith criticism and sciences ('ilal al-hadith, volume 14 onward), biographical evaluations of transmitters (al-rijal), and asceticism and ethics (al-adab wa-l-zuhd) .

Methodology

The methodology established in the volume dictates that only printed collections of transmitted masa'il and classical works containing direct transmissions from Ahmad ibn Hanbal—even if a single report—be included . The compilers adopted specific editorial rules:

  • Condition of Named Transmitters: Narrations are included on the condition that the specific transmitter reporting directly from Ahmad is named; general assertions that a position was "a narration from Ahmad" or "his school" without an identified narrator were excluded .
  • Treatment of the Musnad: Ahmad's primary Hadith collection, the Musnad, was excluded from the text of the encyclopedia, except where it contained an explicit critical evaluation of a narrator, chain of transmission, or jurisprudential ruling . In other works containing chains of transmission by Ahmad, reports identical in wording to those in the Musnad were omitted to avoid redundancy .
  • Arrangement: In the subsequent jurisprudence volumes, legal issues are brought together by thematic chapter (bab), matching each issue with its counterparts and referencing the original numbering or page numbers of the source texts .
