al-Jami li-Ahkam al-Tahara (The Comprehensive Compendium for the Rulings of Ritual Purity) is a contemporary legal and hadith-based treatise on ritual purification in Islamic jurisprudence, authored by Muhammad ibn Ali Halawa .
Purpose and Methodology
Halawa composed the work in response to what he observed as many Muslims' neglect of the jurisprudence of ritual purification (tahara) and their lack of familiarity with its rules, Sunnah practices, and etiquettes, aiming to provide a practical guide for Muslims and a foundational text for students of Islamic knowledge .
The author's methodology relies primarily on authentic (sahih) Prophetic traditions, while also citing certain weak (da'if) hadiths to elucidate their deficiency or refute rulings derived from them . He integrates textual reports (athar) from the Companions and Successors, extracts the opinions of jurists directly from their original sources, and applies the principles of al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil (hadith transmitter criticism) to evaluate chains of transmission . The book seeks to reconcile seemingly contradictory narrations and adopts legal preferences (tarjih) based on the strength of textual evidence rather than adherence to a single madhhab .
Structure and Contents
The book is structured into ten thematic chapters (abwab), arranged according to what the author describes as a sequential order of purification practices :
- Water (al-miyah): The primary medium of purification.
- Impurities (al-najasat): Types of ritual filth and methods of removal.
- Vessels (al-aniyah): Containers utilized for holding water.
- Relieving Oneself (qada' al-hajah): Etiquettes and legal rulings of answering the call of nature.
- Characteristics of Natural Disposition (khisal al-fitrah): Hygienic practices aligned with the innate human disposition.
- Ablution (al-wudu'): Rules, pillars, and nullifiers of minor ritual washing.
- Wiping over Barriers (al-mash 'ala al-ha'il): Rulings on wiping over leather socks, footwear, and related coverings.
- Ritual Bath (al-ghusl): Injunctions and procedures for major ritual washing.
- Dry Ablution (al-tayammum): The substitute purification when water is unavailable or unusable.
- Menstruation (al-hayd): Specific rulings concerning female bleeding and associated purity regulations .
Reception and Publication
Upon its completion, Halawa presented the manuscript to the contemporary scholar Mustafa al-Adawi, who reviewed the text, suggested amendments, and contributed a foreword praising its integration of hadith criticism with comparative legal analysis . The book has been published in a single volume by Maktabat Makkah .
