al-Ittiba (also known as Latif al-Ittiba) is a specialized Arabic linguistic monograph by the lexicographer Abu al-Tayyib al-Lughawi (d. 351 AH / 962 CE), devoted to the lexical phenomenon of al-ittiba (alliterative and rhyming word pairings) .

Subject Matter and Scope

The work focuses on al-ittiba, a rhetorical and lexical feature in Arabic where a secondary word follows a primary word on the same meter or rhyme to reinforce or emphasize its meaning . In classical linguistic classification, the following term (al-tabi) depends on the preceding term (al-matbu) and is typically not used independently to convey meaning on its own .

Structure and Method

Abu al-Tayyib al-Lughawi arranged the text as a concise treatise organized alphabetically according to the Arabic letters (huruf al-mu'jam) .

Scholarly Reception and Comparison

The book is recognized among the early specialized treatises dedicated to the subject, alongside similar monographs such as al-Ittiba wa-l-Albab by Ibn Khalawayh and al-Ittiba wa-l-Muzawajah by Ibn Faris . Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri noted in Risalat al-Ghufran that Abu al-Tayyib authored a short book on al-ittiba arranged alphabetically that circulated among the scholars of Baghdad . Later philologists observed that al-Suyuti, when treating the chapter on al-ittiba in his encyclopedic work al-Muzhir, did not make use of Abu al-Tayyib's monograph .

Publication

The work was edited by Izz al-Din al-Tanukhi and published in Damascus under the auspices of the Arab Academy of Damascus (Majma al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah bi-Dimashq) in 1380 AH / 1961 CE .
