al-Ithar bi-Marifat Ruwat al-Athar (The Preference in Knowing the Narrators of al-Athar) is a biographical dictionary of hadith narrators compiled by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (773–852 AH / 1372–1449 CE), focusing on the transmitters and figures appearing in Kitab al-Athar by Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani (d. 189 AH / 805 CE) from Imam Abu Hanifa .

Composition and Context

Ibn Hajar authored the work at the request of his student, the Hanafi scholar Qasim ibn Qutlubugha . In the opening preface, Ibn Hajar noted that he readily complied with a request from colleagues to evaluate the narrators in Shaybani's Kitab al-Athar . When Ibn Qutlubugha read the work back to him in study sessions, Ibn Hajar praised his editorial scrutiny, noting that Ibn Qutlubugha's observations and corrections were appended to the master manuscript . Ibn Qutlubugha subsequently authored his own treatise on the narrators of the same work .

Scope and Methodology

The work encompasses every individual mentioned in Kitab al-Athar, whether they formally transmitted reports or were merely referenced by name or left unnamed, in order to maximize the book's utility . Ibn Hajar structured the book into three successive divisions arranged alphabetically:

  1. Proper names (al-asma').
  2. Patronymics (al-kuna).
  3. Unnamed or ambiguous figures (al-mubhamat) .

In assessing transmitters, Ibn Hajar adopted a differentiated approach:

  • Narrators already documented in al-Mizzi's Tahdhib al-Kamal were not re-evaluated in detail; Ibn Hajar generally sufficed by indicating their presence in al-Tahdhib, commenting further only when a specific scholarly reason warranted it .
  • Narrators omitted from Tahdhib al-Kamal received full biographical notices summarizing their standing, including scholarly commendations (madh) and criticisms (qadh) in a concise manner .

Publication History

The work has been published in several modern editions, including a 1407 AH / 1987 CE edition by Idarat al-Quran wa-al-Ulum al-Islamiyya in Pakistan , and an edition edited by Sayyid Kasrawi Hasan published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya in Beirut .
