al-Isra wal-Miraj wa Dhikr Ahadithihima wa Takhrijiha wa Bayan Sahihiha ("The Night Journey and Ascension, Mention of Their Hadiths, Their Documentation, and Elucidation of Their Authentic Narrations") is a hadith treatise by the Syrian-Albanian hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) . The book compiles, cross-references, and evaluates the prophetic narrations regarding the Prophet's Night Journey (al-Isra) and Ascension (al-Miraj) to distinguish sound reports from defective ones .

Background and Composition

The book originally stemmed from al-Albani's larger project Sahih al-Sirah (The Authentic Prophetic Biography) and his broader initiative Taqrib al-Sunnah bayna Yaday al-Ummah ("Bringing the Sunnah Closer to the Muslim Community") . Al-Albani chose to separate the topic of the Night Journey and Ascension into an independent monograph .

As recorded in his own handwriting on the draft manuscript cover, his intended full title was Sahih al-Isra wal-Miraj wa Dhikr Ahadithihima wa Takhrijiha wa Bayan Sahihiha min Saqimiha wa Sard Ma Sahha Minha fi Siyaq Wahid bi-Uslub Farid Badi' La Tarahu fi Kitab ("The Authentic [Narrations] of the Night Journey and Ascension, Mention of Their Hadiths, Their Documentation, Distinguishing Their Sound from Defective Narrations, and Recounting What is Authentic in a Single Narrative with a Unique Style Not Found in Any Book") . Al-Albani intended to weave all authentic narrations together into a single continuous narrative, but he died before completing this harmonization, leaving the work in an unfinished draft format .

Content and Method

The work arranges the narrations of the Night Journey according to the Companion transmitters, beginning with the hadiths of Abu Hurayrah and Anas ibn Malik . Within the compilation, al-Albani traces differing transmission paths and notes textual variations, utilizing shorthand sigla to indicate hadith sources :

  • خ (Kh) for Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari
  • م (M) for Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj
  • حم (Hm) for Ahmad ibn Hanbal
  • عبد ('Abd) for Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal
  • ت (T) for Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi
  • جرير (Jarir) for Ibn Jarir al-Tabari

Publication

The manuscript was prepared for posthumous publication with the help of students of knowledge and released by al-Maktabah al-Islamiyyah in Amman, Jordan, with a publisher's introduction dated 3 Dhu al-Qi'dah 1420 AH . The book was printed in a medium single volume comprising 138 pages .
