al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf (The Survey into the Stations of the Nobles) is a biographical and moral-narrative work compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist and educator Ibn Abi al-Dunya (208–281 AH / 823–894 CE) . The book documents historical anecdotes, sayings, and reports concerning prominent and eminent figures (ashraf) from early Arab and Islamic history .
Subject and Content
In early Arabic linguistic and historical usage, the term sharif referred broadly to an eminent, noble, or high-ranking individual in society, rather than solely to the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Ibn Abi al-Dunya compiled the work according to this broader scope, including accounts of prominent societal figures across early history, extending even to controversial leaders noted for tyranny or transgression, such as al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi .
The text is arranged with chains of transmission (isnads) and encompasses prophetic hadiths, narrations from the Companions—such as Umar ibn al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib—as well as tales of the early generations (salaf) and bedouins . As with Ibn Abi al-Dunya's general corpus, the work contains rare narrations (afrad), historical reports, and moral exhortations, alongside some weak chains of transmission that scholars have noted when evaluating theological or legal points .
Title Variations and Manuscripts
The primary title documented in its manuscript heritage is al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf, which is also recorded in historical bibliographies as Kitab al-Ashraf or Manazil al-Ashraf . Manuscript copies of the text have been preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (now housed within the Al-Assad National Library) and reproduced in Kuwait at the Manuscripts Library .
Editions
The work has been edited and published in several modern editions:
- An edition verified against the original manuscripts under the full title al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf, edited by Najm Abd al-Rahman Khalaf (published by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh, 1411 AH / 1990 CE) .
