al-Iqtidab fi Gharib al-Muwatta wa Irabuhu ala al-Abwab (The Extracted Work on the Rare Vocabulary of the Muwatta and Its Chapterwise Grammatical Analysis) is a specialized linguistic and grammatical study of Malik ibn Anas's al-Muwatta, composed by the North African Maliki scholar and judge Muhammad ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Yafrani (d. 625 AH / 1228 CE) .
Background and Composition
Al-Yafrani extracted the material for the work from his own extensive compendium titled al-Mukhtar al-Jami bayna al-Muntaqa wa-l-Istidhkar, a voluminous compilation spanning approximately twenty volumes and around three thousand folios that synthesized Abu al-Walid al-Baji's al-Muntaqa and Ibn Abd al-Barr's al-Istidhkar, supplemented with material from al-Tamhid and other sources .
In his preface, al-Yafrani states that his purpose was to isolate the obscure vocabulary (gharib) and grammatical parsing (i'rab) of the Muwatta into a single, readily accessible volume . By doing so, he intended to relieve students and researchers of the burden of sifting through massive juristic commentaries when seeking purely lexical and grammatical explanations .
Structure and Methodology
The work is organized sequentially following the topical chapters (abwab) of al-Muwatta . Within each chapter, al-Yafrani provides detailed grammatical analyses and lexical clarifications of uncommon phrasing, citing poetic evidence (shawahid) and recording textual variants across different transmissions of the Muwatta .
In constructing his commentary, al-Yafrani drew upon and quoted numerous earlier Andalusian authorities and grammatical sources, including Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawsi, Abu al-Mutarrif al-Qanaza'i, and the Tanbihat of Hisham ibn Ahmad al-Waqqashi .
Modern Editions
The work was edited by Abd al-Rahman ibn Sulayman al-Uthaymin and published by Maktabat al-Obeikan in Riyadh in two volumes in 1421 AH / 2001 CE .
