al-Intisar li-Ashab al-Hadith (The Vindication of the Adherents of Hadith) is a theological and methodological defense written by the scholar Abu al-Muzaffar al-Sam'ani (426–489 AH / 1035–1096 CE) in support of traditionalist hadith scholars (Ahl al-Hadith) .
Structure and Scope
The bibliographer Haji Khalifa describes the work as a concise treatise organized into three main chapters:
- Exhortation toward adhering to the Sunnah and the community (al-hathth 'ala al-sunna wa-al-jama'a).
- The excellence of hadith (fadl al-hadith).
- The tree of knowledge (shajarat al-'ilm) .
Later scholars, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, cited narrations preserved within the second part (al-juz' al-thani) of the book when examining hadith transmissions and their chains .
Content and Arguments
In the text, al-Sam'ani responds directly to two camps that censured traditionalists: speculative theologians (ahl al-kalam) and jurists reliant on speculative legal reasoning (ahl al-ra'y) . He addresses their accusations against the scholars of hadith—including claims of ignorance, superficiality, or being mere couriers of texts—and counters the criticism directed at their dedication to collecting and preserving reports .
Al-Sam'ani argues that while diverse theological factions claimed adherence to the Prophet's legacy, sound belief and authentic methodology remained solely with the scholars of hadith and reports (ashab al-hadith wa-al-athar) . He maintains that their creed was transmitted via an unbroken chain generation after generation from the Successors, the Companions, and the Prophet ﷺ . In contrast, he criticizes other groups for evaluating revelation through independent rational speculation (ma'qul) and personal opinions, thereby rejecting or allegorically distorting texts that did not conform to their rational premises . The treatise also concentrates on refuting theological innovations (bida') and demonstrating the invalidity of sectarian doctrines .
Modern Publication
The book was edited by Muhammad ibn Husayn ibn Hasan al-Jizani and published by Maktabat Adwa' al-Manar in Saudi Arabia in 1417 AH / 1996 CE .
