al-Intihad fi Khatm al-Shifa li-Iyad (The Rising to Conclude al-Shifa of Iyad) is a closing treatise (khatm) authored by the Shafi'i hadith scholar and historian al-Sakhawi (831–902 AH / 1428–1497 CE) upon completing the reading and teaching of al-Shifa bi-Ta'rif Huquq al-Mustafa by al-Qadi Iyad (d. 544 AH) .
Background and Composition
The treatise belongs to the genre of khatm literature, which scholars delivered or recorded at the conclusion of teaching a canonical text to outline its methodology, praise its author, and transmit its chains of narration . al-Sakhawi composed this work in Mecca during Ramadan 893 AH . According to a note by the copyist citing the author's own handwriting on the title leaf of the manuscript, al-Sakhawi composed it swiftly in the span of an hour .
al-Sakhawi authored thirteen closing works on various hadith and biography texts, recording them in his autobiographical accounts in al-Daw' al-Lami' and Irshad al-Ghawi . He composed two distinct closing works on al-Shifa: this concise treatise, titled al-Intihad fi Khatm al-Shifa li-Iyad, and a substantially larger and more expansive work titled al-Riyad fi Khatm al-Shifa li-Iyad .
Contents
The treatise includes:
- Praise of al-Qadi Iyad and his scholarship, along with poetic verses commending al-Shifa .
- A discussion addressing criticisms raised against al-Shifa, particularly the critique of al-Dhahabi regarding the inclusion of weak or unverified transmissions and far-fetched interpretations . al-Sakhawi noted that Iyad operated within the established leeway granted by early scholars regarding reports on prophetic virtues and merits (fada'il), while defending Iyad's standing as a master of hadith .
- al-Sakhawi's transmission chains (asanid) connecting him to al-Qadi Iyad and al-Shifa, which he received through his prominent teachers, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Abu Abd Allah al-Rashidi, and al-Majd al-Hariri .
Transmission and Publication
al-Sakhawi regularly recited his closing treatises to students at al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca . Among those who studied al-Shifa and this khatm under his direct audition were Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Ibn Zuhayrah and Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Ibn Zuhayrah al-Makki .
The text was edited by Abd al-Latif ibn Muhammad al-Jilani based on a unique manuscript preserved in the Library of the Holy Mosque in Mecca (Maktabat al-Haram al-Makki) and published in Beirut by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah (1422 AH / 2001 CE) as part of the Liqa' al-Ashr al-Awakhir bi-al-Masjid al-Haram series .
