al-Intibah lima qala al-Hakim wa lam yukhrijah wa huwa fi ahadihima aw rawayahu (Notice on What al-Hakim Claimed Was Not Narrated by the Two Shaykhs While It Is in One or Both of Them) is a hadith critical work by Muhammad Mahmud Atiya . The book identifies and documents narrations in al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn that al-Hakim claimed were omitted by al-Bukhari and Muslim, whereas they are in fact recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, or both . The author also designated it with the alternative title al-Mustadrak ala al-Mustadrak (Rectification of the Mustadrak) .
Background and Purpose
The author undertook the work after noting that earlier scholars had not exhaustively collected al-Hakim's omissions of this kind . Given the consensus among scholars that the highest level of authenticity belongs to narrations agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, followed by those transmitted individually by al-Bukhari and then by Muslim, attributing a hadith exclusively to al-Hakim based on his statement "and they did not narrate it" (wa lam yukhrijah) could lead unspecialized readers to downgrade its status . The author stated that highlighting these instances serves to demonstrate the preeminence and coverage of the two Sahihs without disparaging al-Hakim, who fell into these oversights largely because he dictated his work late in life without having the opportunity to revise it .
The composition of the text was completed on Friday night, 19 Muharram 1422 AH (13 April 2001 CE) in Abu Dhabi, and the final revision was concluded on Thursday, 8 Jumada al-Ula 1426 AH in Doha, Qatar .
Structure and Content
The author prefaced the study with a biography of al-Hakim, an overview of al-Mustadrak, a concise discussion on scholarly inadvertence (al-wahm wa-l-iham), and the respective methodologies of al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi in his Talkhis .
The core of the book classifies al-Hakim's oversights into six main categories :
- Hadiths declared authentic according to the joint criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim (sahih ala shartihima wa lam yukhrijah), whereas both or one of them actually narrated them .
- Hadiths declared authentic according to al-Bukhari's criteria (sahih ala shart al-Bukhari wa lam yukhrijah), whereas al-Bukhari narrated them .
- Hadiths declared authentic according to Muslim's criteria (sahih ala shart Muslim wa lam yukhrijah), whereas Muslim narrated them .
- Hadiths declared authentic (sahih or sahih al-isnad wa lam yukhrijah), whereas one or both narrated them .
- Hadiths where al-Hakim claimed that the Two Shaykhs did not record the text with that specific phrasing or only recorded it in abridged form, whereas it is found in full or with that phrasing in one or both of them .
- Hadiths on which al-Hakim remained silent without ruling, yet one or both of the Two Shaykhs narrated them .
Based on his tally across al-Mustadrak, the author tracked 227 hadiths where al-Hakim claimed they met the joint criteria without being included by either compiler; 74 of these were agreed upon by both, 75 were narrated by al-Bukhari alone, and 78 by Muslim alone . In 17 hadiths claimed to meet al-Bukhari's criteria alone, al-Bukhari narrated 16 and Muslim narrated one . In 99 hadiths claimed to meet Muslim's criteria alone, 21 were narrated by both, 6 by al-Bukhari alone, and 72 by Muslim alone . In 120 hadiths where al-Hakim simply stated "authentic" or "sound chain," 29 were narrated by both, 32 by al-Bukhari alone, and 59 by Muslim alone . Among 46 hadiths where al-Hakim gave no judgment, 8 were narrated by both, and 19 were narrated individually by each compiler .
