al-Insaf fi Masa'il al-Khilaf bayn al-Nahwiyyin al-Basriyyin wa al-Kufiyyin (Fair Assessment of Disputed Issues Between the Basran and Kufan Grammarians) is a work on comparative Arabic grammar by Abu al-Barakat al-Anbari (513–577 AH / 1119–1181 CE) . It compiles and evaluates the theoretical and grammatical disputes between the grammatical schools of Basra and Kufa .

Composition and Purpose

Al-Anbari composed the book while teaching at the al-Nizamiyya Madrasah in Baghdad in response to requests from jurists and students of literature studying the Arabic language with him . They asked him to summarize the famous points of dispute between the grammarians of Basra and Kufa and to model its organization on the structure of Islamic legal disagreement literature (kutub al-khilaf) between al-Shafi'i and Abu Hanifa . Al-Anbari noted in his introduction that this was the first book in Arabic linguistic science to be arranged in that manner, stating his aim to examine each party's arguments with fairness rather than partisanship .

Scope and Method

The work examines 121 disputed questions covering syntax and morphology, though some manuscript copies list 118 questions and add three to complete the count . For each question, al-Anbari employs a judicial, debate-oriented method divided into four stages:

  1. Presenting the claims: Stating the position held by the Kufans followed by that of the Basrans to frame the scope of the dispute .
  2. Presenting evidence: Detailing the proofs of both camps—drawing upon transmitted textual attestations (sama') and grammatical analogy (qiyas)—commencing with the Kufan arguments and following them with the Basran arguments .
  3. Rebuttals: Presenting each school's refutation of the other's evidence, which most frequently details the Basrans' counterarguments against the Kufans .
  4. Judgment: Settling the debate and endorsing one of the two positions, though al-Anbari sometimes limits this to reciting the Basran counterarguments as his own verdict .

Critical Assessment and Reception

Although al-Anbari pledged in his introduction to judge impartially between both traditions, commentators note that he strongly leaned toward the Basran school and endorsed the Kufan stance in only about seven questions . These include the Kufan views that lawla acts directly as the governing agent of the nominative noun following it, that the predicate of laysa cannot precede it, that the first lam in la'alla is an original root letter, and that poetic license permits treating a triptote noun as a diptote .

Editions and Commentary

Manuscripts of the book were preserved in libraries such as Leiden, the El Escorial, and the Yeni Mosque in Istanbul . Selections from the text were edited and published in Europe in the late nineteenth century by scholars such as J. Koschut in Vienna and W. Girgas . A complete edition with indices and a study in German by Gotthold Weil was published by Brill in Leiden in 1913 .

The work was later printed multiple times in Egypt, including editions at the al-Istiqaama press in 1940 and the al-Sa'ada press in 1955 . The Egyptian scholar Muhammad Muhyi al-Din Abd al-Hamid edited the text and composed an extensive commentary on it titled al-Intisaf min al-Insaf .
