al-Ilhad al-Khumayni fi Ard al-Haramayn (Khomeini's Heresy in the Land of the Two Holy Sanctuaries) is a polemical treatise written by the Yemeni Salafi scholar Muqbil bin Hadi al-Wadii (d. 1422 AH / 2001 CE), criticizing the ideology of Ruhollah Khomeini and the political demonstrations organized by Iranian pilgrims during the Hajj in Mecca and Medina .

Background and Purpose of Composition

Al-Wadi'i explains in his introduction that after completing his book Irshad Dhawi al-Fitan li-Ib'ad Ghulat al-Rawafid min al-Yaman (Guiding the Intelligent to Repelling the Extremist Rafidites from Yemen), he took a short break before continuing his work on al-Sahih al-Musnad mimma Laysa fi al-Sahihayn . During this interval, he read the thirty-eighth chapter of al-'Iqd al-Thamin fi Tarikh al-Balad al-Amin by Taqi al-Din al-Fasi, which chronicles historical tribulations and conflicts that occurred in Mecca during the Islamic era, such as the sack of Mecca by the Qarmatians in 317 AH under Abu Tahir al-Qarmati .

Reflecting on these historical crises and comparing them to the security and peace experienced by modern pilgrims, al-Wadi'i came to the view that the political marches organized by Shi'ite followers of Khomeini during the pilgrimage threatened to open similar doors of civil strife (fitna) in the sacred precincts . Having already warned against these demonstrations in his Friday and Eid sermons, he authored this book to expand his warnings to a wider readership .

Contents and Methodology

The work addresses theological, ritual, and political controversies surrounding Iranian political activism in the Two Holy Sanctuaries:

  • Critique of Demonstrations During Hajj: Al-Wadi'i argues that staging mass demonstrations with collective chanting during pilgrimage rites—such as during the circumambulation (tawaf), at Mina, or at Mount Arafat—is an un-Islamic innovation and an imitation of non-Muslim practices . He identifies their objectives as ostentation before Ahl al-Sunna and the incitement of discord, citing hadiths that warn against bearing arms or causing disruption among Muslims .
  • Theological Critiques: The book critiques various Shi'ite doctrinal positions and practices, including invocations directed toward Ali ibn Abi Talib and Husayn ibn Ali in the Grand Mosque, which the author classifies as unlawful deviations in the sanctuary .
  • Defense of the Companions: The text adduces reports from the early generations (al-Salaf) warning against reviling the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, citing narrations from Aisha, Abdullah ibn Umar, and others .
  • Appended Treatise: At the conclusion of the text, al-Wadi'i appended an account by Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Matari documenting personal observations and interactions with Shi'ite figures in Iran, detailing their devotion to Khomeini and views toward theological opponents .

Publication

The book was published in Cairo by Maktabat al-Haramayn in 1407 AH (1987 CE) as a single paperback volume .
