al-I'lam fi Idah ma Khafi ala al-Imam (The Notification in Clarifying What Was Hidden from the Imam) is a contemporary Hadith critique written by Abu Abd Allah Fahd ibn Abd Allah al-Sunayd, completed in 1414 AH (1994 CE) . The book presents critical emendations (ta'aqqubat) on various Hadith rulings and verifications made by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, accompanied by evaluations of narrators transmitted from Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Baz .
Purpose and Composition
Al-Sunayd finalized the treatise in Riyadh on 16 Ramadan 1414 AH . In his introduction, he commended al-Albani's contributions to distinguishing sound from weak Hadiths in the modern era, acknowledging the benefit he and other students had gained from al-Albani's writings . Al-Sunayd noted that his own interest and grounding in transmission chains (asanid) and narrator criticism (rijal) had developed primarily through attending the lessons of Ibn Baz, where major primary Hadith collections—such as the Six Books, Ahmad ibn Hanbal's al-Musnad, al-Darimi's al-Sunan, and Ibn Hibban's al-Sahih—were recited .
Observing that scholarly oversights naturally occur when working extensively on Hadith verification, al-Sunayd gathered instances where he concluded that al-Albani had authenticated weak narrations or had reached conclusions open to technical objection, incorporating the narrator appraisals of Ibn Baz alongside his own commentary .
Method and Content
The work addresses individual narrations found across al-Albani's publications, including Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha . For each examined text, al-Sunayd quotes al-Albani's verdict and then presents a detailed critique of the chain of transmission . His analyses focus on identifying narrator anonymity (jahala), evaluating transmitter reliability according to classical authorities, examining regional variations in transmission (such as narrators whose reliability depends on the geographic origin of their pupils), and identifying supporting chains (shawahid) and textual variants across source collections .
Reception and Response
The work was recognized for its respectful academic tone toward al-Albani. In his bibliography of al-Albani's works and related literature, Abd Allah al-Shamrani noted that by the title's phrase "the Imam," al-Sunayd explicitly intended al-Albani, reflecting an attitude of scholarly etiquette and deference .
Al-Albani responded directly to one of the book's criticisms in the seventh volume of Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha, stating that al-Sunayd had addressed him "with politeness and gentleness" in the treatise . In that discussion, al-Albani acknowledged the accuracy of al-Sunayd's correction regarding an earlier marginal cross-reference in Mishkat al-Masabih, while maintaining and clarifying his position on the broader legal exception under debate .
