al-Ilal (كتاب العلل) is an early treatise on hadith criticism, transmitter evaluation, and hidden textual and isnad defects (‘ilal), composed by the Basran hadith master Ali ibn al-Madini (161–234 AH / 778–848 CE) .
Scope and Transmission
Ibn al-Madini composed multiple specialized books on hadith defects, most of which are no longer extant in full . Among the titles attributed to him by classical biographers such as Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim are Ilal al-Musnad in thirty volumes, a fourteen-volume transmission recorded by Ismail al-Qadi, Ilal Hadith Ibn ‘Uyaynah in thirteen volumes, al-Wahm wa-l-Khata in five volumes, Ikhtilaf al-Hadith in five volumes, and al-Ilal al-Mutafarriqah in thirty volumes .
The surviving text published under the title al-Ilal represents an extant portion preserved through the transmission of Ibn al-Madini's student Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Bara' (d. 291 AH) . Scholars note that this surviving tract likely constitutes an excerpt from his broader work al-Ilal al-Mutafarriqah, while Andalusian scholars historically studied related material under the title Ma‘rifat Man Yaduru ‘Alayhi al-Isnad .
Content and Structure
The preserved text contains unarranged questions and responses covering four broad thematic areas :
- General foundational discussions concerning hadith criticism and biographical evaluation (‘ilm al-rijal) .
- The chronological classes (tabaqat) of narrators across various Islamic regions and identification of the earliest hadith compilers .
- Analysis of prolific narrators and the pivotal transmitters around whom transmission chains revolve (madar al-isnad), starting with the Companions—specifically Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Abd Allah ibn Abbas and their respective student circles—down to Ibn al-Madini's era .
- Evaluations of individual narrators along with specific defective hadith reports examined through their conflicting transmission paths .
Reception and Standing
Classical authorities held Ibn al-Madini's works on defects in high regard. Ibn Kathir described Ibn al-Madini's Kitab al-Ilal as one of the finest, greatest, and most authoritative books composed on the subject . Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini likewise cited it as the greatest treatise in the genre . The Andalusian traditionist Maslama ibn Qasim noted that Ibn al-Madini guarded his Kitab al-Ilal carefully due to its immense value and utility . Later traditionists, including Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, drew extensively on Ibn al-Madini's critical judgments and rules across their own works on hadith methodology .
Editions
The surviving text has been edited and published in multiple printings:
- An edition titled al-Ilal, edited by Muhammad Mustafa al-A'zami, published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut (1392 AH / 1972 CE) .
- An edition titled ‘Ilal al-Hadith wa-Ma‘rifat al-Rijal, edited by Abd al-Mu‘ti Amin Qal‘aji, published by Dar al-Wa‘y in Aleppo (1400 AH / 1980 CE) .
- An edition edited by Mazin al-Sirsawi, titled ‘Ilal al-Hadith wa-Ma‘rifat al-Rijal wa-l-Tarikh (and published as ‘Ilal al-Hadith by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi), which corroborated its attribution through transmission lines and parallels in early hadith literature .
