al-Ilal li-Ibn Abi Hatim (The Book of Hidden Hadith Defects), also known as Ilal al-hadith, is a classical work on hadith criticism and defect analysis authored by the traditionist Ibn Abi Hatim (240–327 AH / 854–938 CE) .

Structure and Method

The book comprises 2,840 hadith entries organized according to the thematic chapters of Islamic jurisprudence (abwab al-fiqh), facilitating easy reference for legal and traditionist studies . Its material is primarily framed in a question-and-answer format, recording inquiries Ibn Abi Hatim posed regarding problematic transmissions and the critical evaluations provided in response .

The core of the book consists of the expert critiques of two prominent critics of Rayy: the author's father, Abu Hatim al-Razi, and Abu Zur'ah al-Razi . In addition to their verdicts, Ibn Abi Hatim incorporates his own assessments alongside statements from other early hadith authorities, including Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan, Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Junayd, and Muhammad ibn Awf al-Himsi . The text analyzes hidden defects (ilal) occurring in both chains of transmission (isnad) and texts (matn), examining divergent transmission paths, identifying narrator errors and misattributions, and addressing narrator reliability (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) .

Scholarly Standing and Commentary

The work is regarded by hadith specialists as one of the most important classical references in the field of ilal . Ibn Kathir described it as among the finest and most distinguished books written on the subject alongside the Ilal of Ali ibn al-Madini, singling out its topical arrangement by jurisprudential chapters for praise . It was likewise highlighted by Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi and al-Sakhawi as essential reading for students of hadith .

The Damascene scholar Ibn Abd al-Hadi commenced a detailed commentary on the book, but passed away after completing a single volume covering only a small portion of the text . The modern scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Mu'allimi compiled a specialized treatise extracting over fifty analytical benefits directly from the work .

Transmission and Modern Editions

The text was transmitted from Ibn Abi Hatim through multiple lines of transmission, including a prominent chain via Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Fadl ibn Shahriyar al-Ardastani to Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Katib al-Isbahani .

An early printed edition was published by Muhibb al-Din al-Khatib at al-Matba'ah al-Salafiyyah in 1343 AH, though it suffered from manuscript omissions and textual misreadings . A later critical edition was prepared by a team of researchers supervised by Sa'd ibn Abd Allah al-Humayyid and Khalid al-Juraysi, published in 1427 AH / 2006 CE .
