Al-Ilal al-Mutanahiya fi al-Ahadith al-Wahiya (The Exhaustive Defects in Flimsy Hadiths) is a hadith critical work by the Hanbali scholar Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH / 1201 CE), dedicated to identifying and examining severely defective and weak prophetic traditions .
Scope and Structure
Ibn al-Jawzi designated the book for collecting flimsy and severely weak hadiths (al-ahadith al-wahiya), while dedicating another major compilation, Kitab al-Mawdu'at, specifically to fabricated narrations . The work is organized topically according to standard subject chapters (al-abwab), rather than by individual narrators or companion musnads . In it, Ibn al-Jawzi cites the defective narrations along with their chains of transmission, evaluates their transmission flaws, and references the assessments of earlier critical hadith authorities . The book spans two volumes .
Reception and Scholarly Critique
Later hadith scholars examined the relationship between Al-Ilal al-Mutanahiya and Ibn al-Jawzi's Kitab al-Mawdu'at. Shams al-Din al-Sakhawi noted that Ibn al-Jawzi frequently overlapped between the two works, citing numerous narrations in Al-Ilal al-Mutanahiya that he also included in al-Mawdu'at, while likewise including merely weak or flimsy reports in al-Mawdu'at despite the distinct classifications implied by their titles . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani similarly observed this overlap and noted that across both works, Ibn al-Jawzi still omitted as many fabricated and flimsy hadiths as the amount he managed to record .
The book was abridged by al-Dhahabi under the title Talkhis al-Ilal al-Mutanahiya fi al-Ahadith al-Wahiya, in which he independently re-evaluated, verified, and commented on the narrations, contributing much of the work's source-referencing (takhrij) .
Editions
The work has been published in modern print editions in two volumes, including an edition edited by Irshad al-Haqq al-Athari with an introduction by Khalil al-Mays .
