al-Ikmāl fī Dhikr man Lahu Riwāyah fī Musnad al-Imām Aḥmad min al-Rijāl (The Completion: Mention of Men Who Have Narrations in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad) is a biographical dictionary of hadith transmitters by the Syrian hadith scholar and historian Abu al-Mahasin al-Husayni (715–765 AH / 1315–1364 CE) . It compiles the biographies of transmitters found in the Musnad Ahmad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal who were omitted from al-Mizzi’s Tahdhib al-Kamal fi Asma' al-Rijal .

Purpose and Composition

The work arose from al-Husayni’s engagement with Tahdhib al-Kamal, the comprehensive biographical reference for the transmitters of the six canonical Sunni hadith collections . While abridging al-Mizzi’s text, al-Husayni cross-referenced and tagged the narrators who also appeared in Musnad Ahmad . He then composed al-Ikmal as a dedicated biographical supplement (zawa'id) containing the remaining transmitters of the Musnad who had no entry in al-Mizzi's work . Al-Husayni incorporated these biographies alongside narrators of the four legal collections in his broader work al-Tadhkirah bi-Ma'rifat Rijal al-'Asharah .

Influence and Reception

Later scholars relied extensively on al-Ikmal when compiling biographical dictionaries that expanded beyond the six canonical books:

  • Ibn Kathir utilized al-Ikmal in his biographical work al-Takmil fi al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil, adopting the symbol alif (أ) for transmitters added from it to indicate their appearance in Musnad Ahmad, though he occasionally followed al-Husayni in misidentifying certain narrators as unique additions .
  • Ibn al-Jazari expanded upon al-Husayni’s omissions in a supplement titled al-Maqsad al-Ahmad fi Rijal Musnad Ahmad, a portion of which was lost during the turmoil caused by Timur in Damascus in 803 AH / 1400–1401 CE, prompting him to re-author it in abridged form .
  • Abu Zur'ah Ibn al-Iraqi integrated the transmitters from al-Ikmal into his Dhayl al-Kashif alongside entries from Tahdhib al-Kamal omitted by al-Dhahabi .
  • Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani examined the work and noted several oversights and unintended errors in al-Husayni's transmitter identification, which led Ibn Hajar to author his own critical compilation of extra transmitters, Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah bi-Zawa'id Rijal al-A'immah al-Arba'ah .
