al-Ihkam Sharh Usul al-Ahkam (The Perfecting Explanation of the Foundations of Legal Rulings), also titled Ihkam al-Ahkam Sharh Usul al-Ahkam, is a four-volume work on legal hadiths and Quranic texts of jurisprudence by the Najdi Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim (1312–1392 AH / 1894–1972 CE; another report gives his birth year as 1319 AH / 1901 CE) .
Origin and Scope
The book serves as Ibn Qasim's comprehensive commentary on his own foundational compendium, Usul al-Ahkam . In compiling the base text, Ibn Qasim gathered textual evidence from Quranic verses and prophetic traditions covering practical jurisprudence across acts of worship and commercial transactions . He noted that while foundational legal rulings revolve around approximately 500 Quranic verses and 500 central hadiths, the detailed secondary narrations consist of roughly 4,000 authentic (sahih) and acceptable (hasan) hadiths, the majority of which he incorporated into the summary, including weak narrations only where they conformed to established legal principles . Ibn Qasim stated that he composed the text to facilitate access to scriptural sources for students at a time when scholarly focus had become fragmented across subsidiary fields and extensive manuals .
Method and Content
In al-Ihkam, Ibn Qasim expands upon each text in the base compendium to elucidate its meanings, support its underlying premises, and cite relevant verses, narrations, and scholarly consensus (ijma) . His commentary draws upon the positions of the majority of early scholars (jumhur al-salaf) as well as the analytical preferences and legal weightings of Ibn Taymiyyah and other leading authorities .
Publication and Reception
The commentary was published in four large volumes, with an early edition printed in Damascus at Matba'at al-Taraqqi in 1375 AH (1955–1956 CE), and subsequent editions published posthumously by the author's heirs . Assessing Ibn Qasim's scholarly output across different fields, Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Madani remarked that Ibn Qasim demonstrated the proficiency of a jurist in his supercommentary on al-Rawd al-Murbi' and that of a hadith specialist (muhaddith) in Ihkam al-Ahkam .
