al-Idah fi Manasik al-Hajj wal-Umra (Clarification on the Rites of the Greater and Lesser Pilgrimages) is a legal treatise on the rituals of Hajj and Umrah according to the Shafi'i school, authored by Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631–676 AH / 1233–1277 CE) .
Composition and Structure
Al-Nawawi completed the composition of the work in the month of Rajab in 667 AH (1269 CE) . It opens with the doxology: «الحمد لله ذي الجلال والإكرام» ("Praise be to God, Possessor of Majesty and Honor") .
The work is organized into eight chapters (abwab), designed as a concise manual that encompasses all the primary objectives and practical rules of the pilgrimage while intentionally omitting extended textual proofs . In compiling the text, al-Nawawi summarized the earlier pilgrimage treatise of Ibn al-Salah al-Shahrazuri while incorporating additional rulings and substantial commentary .
Commentaries and Derivatives
The treatise served as a standard reference in Shafi'i jurisprudence and received scholarly commentaries, glosses, and abridgments:
- Commentaries and Glosses: A commentary was written by Nur al-Din Ali al-Samhudi . Later, Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (d. 974 AH) authored an extensive marginal gloss titled Minah al-Fattah fi Sharh Haqa'iq al-Idah .
- Abridgments and Comparative Studies: Ibn Hajar al-Haytami also compiled an abridgment of the work titled Mukhtasar al-Idah . In modern times, the Meccan scholar Abd al-Fattah Husayn Rawwah al-Makki composed al-Ifsah 'ala Masa'il al-Idah, summarizing issues from al-Nawawi's text and Ibn Hajar's gloss alongside the rulings of the four Sunni legal schools .
