al-Ibtal wal-Rafd li-udwan man tajarra ala Kashf al-Shubuhat bil-Naqd (Arabic: الإبطال والرفض لعدوان من تجرأ على كشف الشبهات بالنقض, lit. 'Nullification and Rejection of the Transgression of Whosoever Dared to Refute Kashf al-Shubuhat') is a single-volume theological polemic by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Karim ibn Salih al-Humayd (d. 1445 AH / 2024 CE) . Written in Buraydah in 1422 AH (2001 CE), it is a detailed refutation of Hasan ibn Farhan al-Maliki’s treatise Naqd Kashf al-Shubuhat ('Refutation of Kashf al-Shubuhat'), composed in defense of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (d. 1206 AH / 1792 CE) and his classic creedal treatise Kashf al-Shubuhat ('Unveiling the Doubts') .

Background and Purpose

The treatise was written in response to contemporary writings by Hasan ibn Farhan al-Maliki, particularly his critique of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's theological positions and methodology in Kashf al-Shubuhat . In the introduction, al-Humayd rejects al-Maliki's portrayal of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's reform movement as a political venture, as well as his accusations regarding excommunication (takfir) and fighting . He also condemns al-Maliki's broader works, citing his treatise Qira'ah fi kutub al-aqa'id ('A Reading in Creedal Books') and his criticisms of the Prophet’s Companions and Sunni scholars .

Contents and Structure

Al-Humayd structures his work around addressing al-Maliki's textual objections point by point :

  • Textual Contextualization: Al-Humayd accuses al-Maliki of selectively quoting and truncating passages from Kashf al-Shubuhat to distort their meaning . Consequently, al-Humayd included the full text of Kashf al-Shubuhat in his book, explicitly underlining the sentences omitted by al-Maliki to clarify the original context for readers .
  • Theological Arguments: The work defends Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's exposition on the nature of polytheism (shirk), including the mission of early prophets against veneration of righteous figures, countering al-Maliki's arguments regarding the distinction between grave error, innovation, and major polytheism .
  • Appended Treatises and Poetry: Al-Humayd attached a short supplementary polemic titled Malamih Jahmiyyah ('Jahmi Features'), which he had written against al-Maliki earlier in 1420 AH (1999 CE) . The book also contains original poetic verses composed by al-Humayd censuring al-Maliki and his criticisms of the Companions and scholars .
