al-Hujja ala Ahl al-Madina (Arabic: الحجة على أهل المدينة, lit. 'The Proof Against the People of Medina') is an early treatise of comparative Islamic jurisprudence (ikhtilaf) composed by the Hanafi jurist Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani (131/132–189 AH / 748/750–804/805 CE) . The work presents the legal arguments of the Iraqi Hanafi school in debate with the doctrines and practices of the jurists of Medina .

Title and Classification

The work is recorded under several related titles in bibliographic and biographical sources, including Kitab al-Hujja, al-Hujaj, al-Hujaj fi al-Ihtijaj ala Ahl al-Madina, and al-Ihtijaj ala Ahl al-Madina . In al-Fihrist of Ibn al-Nadim, it is referenced as Kitab al-Hujaj as well as Kitab al-Radd ala Ahl al-Madina , and Haji Khalifa lists it under the title al-Ihtijaj ala Malik .

Within the Hanafi tradition, al-Hujja ala Ahl al-Madina is not classified among the six canonical core texts (Zahir al-Riwaya) of al-Shaybani, which were transmitted by widely established narrations (shuhra or tawatur); rather, it belongs to his secondary corpus of transmitted legal writings .

Content and Methodology

Al-Shaybani studied directly under Malik ibn Anas in Medina after receiving his legal training in Kufa from Abu Hanifa and Abu Yusuf . In al-Hujja ala Ahl al-Madina, he systematically addresses disputed legal questions between the Iraqi and Medinese jurists, utilizing textual proofs from the Quran, the Sunnah, companion reports, and analogical reasoning (qiyas) .

He critiques the Medinese reliance on local practice when it conflicts with transmitted hadiths, noting instances where Medinese scholars omitted narrations from other regions or departed from traditions they had recorded themselves . While al-Shaybani primarily substantiates and defends the rulings of Abu Hanifa, he explicitly adopts the Medinese position on certain issues when he considers their textual evidence to be stronger .

Manuscripts and Editions

A classical manuscript copy of the text is preserved in al-Maktaba al-Mahmudiyya in Medina . The book was printed in Hyderabad, India, by Lajnat Ihya al-Ma'arif al-Nu'maniyya and Matba'at al-Ma'arif al-Sharqiyya, prepared and supervised by Abu al-Wafa al-Afghani with arrangement and annotations by Mahdi Hasan al-Kilani al-Qadiri in four volumes .
