al-Hudud al-Aniqa wa al-Tarifat al-Daqiqa (The Elegant Definitions and Precise Determinations) is a specialized terminological treatise by the Shafi'i jurist and scholar Zakariya al-Ansari (d. 926 AH / 1520 CE), dedicated to defining fundamental terms used in Islamic legal theory (usul al-fiqh) and theology (usul al-din) .

Purpose and Scope

The work belongs to the scholarly genre of dictionaries of technical nomenclature (hudud and ta'rifat) . Al-Ansari composed the text to establish clear boundaries for the vocabulary circulating among legal theorists and theologians, noting in his opening remarks that defining these expressions is indispensable because understanding any defined concept (al-mahdud) depends directly on knowing its definition (al-hadd) . The treatise gathers and explains more than 162 technical terms, clarifying their linguistic roots, technical applications, and conceptual limits .

Contents and Method

The treatise begins with the concept of definition (al-hadd) itself, explaining its linguistic meaning of prevention (al-man')—from which a doorkeeper is called a haddad—and its conventional meaning as that which is comprehensive and exclusive (al-jami' al-mani' or al-muttarid al-mun'akis) .

It proceeds to delineate core epistemological, legal, and theological terms, including:

  • Root (al-asl) and branch (al-far').
  • The universe (al-'alam), defined as everything other than God, named as such because it serves as an indicator ('alam) of the Creator's existence .
  • Thing (al-shay'), contrasting the position of Ahl al-Sunnah (who consider it synonymous with "the existent" [al-mawjud], reality, and subsistence) with the Mu'tazila (who define it as whatever has reality mentally or externally) and lexicographers (who define it as whatever is known and reported) .
  • Knowledge (al-'ilm), defined as the apprehension of a thing as it is, or as a faculty enabling the apprehension of particulars .
  • Cognition (al-ma'rifa), noting its synonymity with al-'ilm as well as opinions distinguishing between the two regarding transitivity and the precedence of ignorance, including the linguistic and scriptural usage of divine attributes .
  • Jurisprudence (al-fiqh), defined linguistically as understanding and technically as the knowledge of practical legal rulings derived from their detailed proofs .

The work has been edited and published in multiple modern editions:
