Bazugh al-Hilal fi al-Khisal al-Mujibah lil-Zilal (The Rising of the Crescent Moon on the Qualities Requiring Shade) is a concise hadith treatise authored by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE) enumerating deeds and righteous virtues that merit shade under the Throne of God on the Day of Resurrection .

Background and Methodology

The work serves as an abridgment of al-Suyuti's own extensive treatise, Tamhid al-Farsh fi al-Khisal al-Mujibah li-Zill al-Arsh (Preparing the Furnishings on the Qualities Requiring the Shade of the Throne) . In the original longer study, al-Suyuti gathered hadiths detailing these qualifying characteristics with their full chains of transmission, investigated the narrators, and tracked supporting narrations (shawahid), expanding the number of recorded traits from the twenty-eight compiled earlier by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani to a total of seventy .

In the abridgment, al-Suyuti omitted the lengthy chains of narration for ease of use, confining each entry to the text of the hadith (matn), the name of the Companion narrator, the sources where the narration was recorded, and an assessment of its authenticity regarding sound or weak status, while referencing parallel transmission routes with phrases such as "and it has a supporting report from so-and-so" . He also rendered these qualities into poetic verses within his commentary on the Muwatta .

Publication and Edition

The treatise was edited, annotated, and prepared for publication by Mashhur ibn Hasan Al Salman . It was published alongside its parent text, Tamhid al-Farsh, in a first edition in 1407 AH (1987 CE) by Maktabat al-Manar in Zarqa, Jordan .
