Al-Ghayth al-Hami Sharh Jam al-Jawami (The Pouring Rain: Commentary on the Gathering of Gatherings) is a work on legal theory (usul al-fiqh) by the Shafi'i traditionist and jurist Ibn al-Iraqi (Abu Zur'ah Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahim, d. 826 AH / 1423 CE) . It is a commentary on Jam al-Jawami, the standard compendium on legal theory composed by Taj al-Din al-Subki (d. 771 AH / 1370 CE) .

Method and Sources

In his introduction, Ibn al-Iraqi characterizes the work as a concise gloss intended primarily to unravel the phrasing and clarify the wording of al-Subki's text . He explicitly notes that he drew the majority of its material directly from Tashnif al-Masami, the commentary written by his contemporary Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi (d. 794 AH / 1392 CE) .

Because of this direct reliance, commentators have described the book as functioning largely as an abridgment of al-Zarkashi's commentary . Nevertheless, Ibn al-Iraqi included his own verifications and independent preferences, occasionally dissenting from earlier positions and providing critical qualifications (istidrakat) on al-Subki's original treatise .

Manuscripts and Editions

Manuscript copies of al-Ghayth al-Hami are preserved in several collections, including Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya (MS 3205), the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin (MS 4524), and Princeton University Library .

The text was edited in academic dissertations at Al-Azhar University, including studies by Muhammad Faraj al-Sayyid Sulayman and Shihab al-Din Faris Abd al-Wahhab . It was published in print in three volumes by Dar al-Faruq al-Haditha / Mu'assasat Qurtuba (1420 AH / 2000 CE), and in an edition edited by Muhammad Tamir Hijazi published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya (1425 AH / 2004 CE) .
