al-Fawakih al-Shahiya fi al-Khutab al-Minbariya wa al-Khutab al-Minbariya ala al-Munasabat (The Delectable Fruits in Pulpit Sermons and Pulpit Sermons for Occasions) is a compendium of Islamic pulpit sermons composed by the Najdi scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Sadi (d. 1376 AH / 1956 CE) .
Composition and Structure
The work brings together two distinct collections of Friday and seasonal sermons written by al-Sadi:
- al-Fawakih al-Shahiya fi al-Khutab al-Minbariya: In his preface, al-Sadi notes that this collection consists of newly drafted sermons produced after he had compiled and published his earlier sermons . He aimed to combine moral exhortation (waʿẓ) with instructional guidance (taʿlīm), addressing both religious and worldly welfare while repelling harm across diverse styles and subjects .
- al-Khutab al-Minbariya ala al-Munasabat: A dedicated set of occasion-based sermons designed to address specific seasons, religious obligations, and communal events .
Content and Themes
The first part covers broad theological, ethical, and legal subjects . Among its themes are the definition and merits of piety (taqwā), sincerity of intentions, divine kindness (luṭf) during hardship, reliance on God (tawakkul), the virtues of remembrance (dhikr), supplication (duʿāʾ), the rights of the Prophet ﷺ, and descriptions of Paradise and Hell . It also includes practical exhortations on communal solidarity during drought, curbing wasteful expenditures, preserving the intellect, and adhering to prophetic manners .
The second part focuses on temporal and situational sermons, such as discourses for the pilgrimage (Hajj), the month of Safar (addressing superstitions), fundraising and contributing to mosque construction, seeking refuge from Satan, and repentance .
