al-Fawaid (also cited as Fawaid min hadith al-Firyabi) is a collection of hadith benefits and narrations compiled by the hadith scholar Abu Bakr Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi (d. 301 AH / 913–914 CE) .
Method and Contents
The work belongs to the fawaid genre of hadith literature, bringing together transmitted hadiths alongside ethical, scholastic, and religious reports . Unlike the customary method of many hadith compilers who appended ancillary prose reports (athar) and poetic verses exclusively to the ends of fascicles or works, al-Firyabi dispersed and interspersed these narrations and verses among the hadiths throughout the compilation . Among the specific topics preserved in the text are narrations addressing the virtue of knowledge over worship (fadl al-'ilm 'ala al-'ibadah) .
Transmission
The collection was transmitted from al-Firyabi by his student Abu al-Qasim Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Khiraqi (d. 374 AH) . From al-Khiraqi, the transmission passed through Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Jawhari, forming the chain through which later scholars, including Abu Tahir al-Silafi, received the work .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscript copies of the work have survived in library collections:
- A manuscript is preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus within the composite collections of al-Madrasa al-Umariyya, preserved alongside al-Firyabi's Kitab al-Siyam .
- A manuscript copy is held in Istanbul at the Şehid Ali Pasha collection (no. 2822) .
The text was edited by Abd al-Wakil al-Nadwi and published in Bombay, India, by al-Dar al-Salafiyyah in 1412 AH / 1992 CE, appended to the end of al-Firyabi's Kitab al-Siyam .
