al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat ala Shart al-Imamayn 1 (Arabic: الفوائد المنتقاة على شرط الإمامين ١, lit. 'Selected Hadith Benefits Meeting the Criteria of the Two Imams, Part 1') is a specialized hadith tract (juz') preserving sound and elevated narrations transmitted by Abu al-Izz Ibn al-Khass (d. 508 AH / 1114 CE) from his teachers, selected and extracted according to the authenticity standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim .
Background and Authorship
The narrations in the text represent the audition (sama') of the Abbasid nobleman Abu al-Izz Muhammad ibn al-Mukhtar ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Mu'ayyad Billah al-Hashimi, known as Ibn al-Khass, who was an inhabitant of the Tahiri Quarter (al-Harim al-Tahiri) in Baghdad . Born in approximately 428 AH, he was regarded as a trustworthy and pious transmitter who lived to the age of eighty, dying on 10 Muharram 508 AH .
The selection and scholarly extraction (takhrij and intiqa') of the collection were executed for Ibn al-Khass by the hadith master Abu Ali al-Bardani (Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Bardani) . The collection draws directly upon Ibn al-Khass's prominent Baghdad teachers, including al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Jawhari, Ibrahim ibn Umar al-Barmaki, Abu Talib Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Fath, Abu Talib Umar ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib, Abu Ya'la ibn al-Farra', Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Muhtadi Billah, and Abd al-Aziz ibn Ali al-Khayyat al-Azaji .
Structure and Methodology
The tract is structured around transmitted prophetic hadiths and related narrations (athar), beginning with the well-known narration on intentions reported by Umar ibn al-Khattab: إنما الأعمال بالنية ("Actions are judged only by intentions") .
For each entry, the compiler provides Ibn al-Khass's direct transmission through his shaykhs back to the Prophet ﷺ, followed by an analytical commentary establishing that the narration satisfies the conditions of Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, or both . The work cross-references the corresponding routes in the two Sahih compilations, specifying the respective authorities through whom al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded the texts . Due to the high status and brevity of the transmission chains (uluww), the commentary repeatedly highlights how closely the contemporary transmission bridges the generation of the two classical compilers, frequently observing that the transmission stands as though the contemporary teacher had received it directly from al-Bukhari or Muslim .
Manuscript Tradition
The first part (al-Juz' al-Awwal) survives in manuscript form at the al-Asad National Library in Damascus (under MS 3847, folios 125–139) . The manuscript comprises fourteen and a half folios written in an eastern script, with approximately twenty-one lines per page . It represents a collated copy bearing corrections and formal audition certificates (sama'at) . Photographic reproductions of this exemplar are held at the Manuscript Center of the Islamic University of Medina and the library of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh .
