al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat al-Awali al-Hisan (The Selected, Elevated, and Fine Beneficial Narrations) is a collection of hadith assembled from the narrations of the hadith scholar Abu Amr al-Samarqandi (d. 345 AH / 956 CE) . It gathers selected prophetic traditions and non-prophetic reports (athar) transmitted through his teachers .
Authorship and Transmission
The work preserves the transmissions of Abu Amr Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Harun al-Samarqandi al-Misri, who is also referred to as Uthman ibn Ahmad al-Samarqandi . al-Samarqandi was a recognized hadith scholar in Egypt whose chains of transmission were noted for their elevation (uluww al-isnad) .
The text was transmitted on his authority through the narration (riwayah) of Abu Tahir al-Anbari (Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah al-Baghdadi) .
Structure and Content
The compendium belongs to the fawa'id (beneficial selections) genre, consisting of short hadith parts (ajza') . The material comprises both prophetic hadiths and companion or successor narrations (athar) .
The collection is organized around the author's teachers (shuyukh), though it does not arrange them in alphabetical order . Unlike some parallel collections of selected fawa'id, early scholars categorized it among the parts whose individual hadiths were not comprehensively extracted (laysat mukharrajat al-ahadith) within the primary text .
Manuscripts and Editions
Manuscript copies of the collection are held in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under several composite codices (majami'), including MS 3747 (ff. 66–74), MS 3856 (ff. 120–126), and MS 3816 (ff. 107–120) . A complete copy transcribed from the Zahiriyya exemplar was copied in 603 AH by Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Maqdisi across ten folios, bearing reading certificates (sama'at) from the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries AH .
The work has been edited and published in modern print:
- Edited and verified by Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni, published by Maktabat Ibn Taymiyya in Cairo and Maktabat al-Kharraz in Jeddah (1st edition, 1418 AH / 1997 CE) .
- Edited by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim ibn Ubayd, published by Umm al-Qura University (1st edition, 1418 AH) .
