al-Fawaid al-Lughawiyya (Arabic: الفوائد اللغوية, lit. 'Linguistic Benefits') is a treatise of excerpted philological notes by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi (d. 1386 AH / 1966 CE), compiled from the adab anthology al-Kanz al-Madfun wa-al-Fulk al-Mashhun .
Source and Composition
The work consists of linguistic and lexical selections that al-Mu'allimi extracted from al-Kanz al-Madfun wa-al-Fulk al-Mashhun, an encyclopedic collection of literature, anecdotes, and miscellany . Although early printings, such as the Bulaq edition of 1288 AH, attributed al-Kanz al-Madfun to Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, research indicates that it was authored by Yunus al-Maliki Sharaf al-Din (d. 750 AH), a student of al-Dhahabi . While al-Mu'allimi did not explicitly identify the source by name in his manuscript notes, textual analysis confirms it as the sole source of the excerpted material .
Contents and Scope
The treatise encompasses core subjects within Arabic philology (fiqh al-lughah), including:
- Synonyms (mutaradifat) and contronyms or antonyms (addad) .
- Morphological triplets (muthallathat) and variations across Arabic dialects, including words exhibiting two or more dialectal forms .
- Vocalic distinctions and orthography, covering words that take a hamzah versus those that do not, as well as distinctions between open (maftuh), broken (maksur), and joined (madmum) vowels .
Al-Mu'allimi did not adhere strictly to the sequential ordering of the original book and supplemented the text with his own additions not found in the source, including supplementary lists of names for wine and versified classifications of paronomasia (jinas) .
Publication
The text was edited from al-Mu'allimi's manuscripts and published as part of his collected works (Athar al-Shaykh al-Allama Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani), appearing in the volume dedicated to his grammatical and philological treatises (Majmu Rasail al-Nahw wa-al-Lughah) issued by Dar Alam al-Fawaid in Mecca under the scientific supervision of Ali ibn Muhammad al-Umran .
