al-Fawaid al-Hisan al-Sihah wa al-Gharaib (Arabic: الفوائد الحسان الصحاح والغرائب, lit. 'The Fine, Sound, and Singular Benefits'), commonly known as al-Khila‘iyyat (الخلعيات) or Fawa’id al-Khila‘i, is a twenty-part hadith compendium transmitted from the Egyptian Shafi‘i jurist and hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Khila'i (405–492 AH / 1014–1099 CE) .

Compilation and Content

The collection was extracted (takrij) and selected from al-Khila‘i’s auditions (masmu‘at) by Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Shirazi . It is structured into twenty parts (ajza’) . In addition to prophetic hadiths with their full chains of transmission, the work incorporates non-prophetic traditions (athar), literary reports, and poetic verses (ash‘ar) .

In manuscript copies and traditional bibliographical notices, the work appears under slight variants of its full title, including al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat al-Hisan min al-Sihah wa al-Gharaib and al-Fawaid al-Muntaqat al-Gharaib wa al-‘Awali .

Transmission and Standing

The primary and final direct narrator to transmit the complete work from al-Khila‘i was Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Rifa'ah al-Sa'di . Later scholars subsequently transmitted the collection through him, notably Muhammad ibn ‘Imad al-Harrani and Abu Sadiq al-Hasan ibn Yahya ibn al-Sabbah .

The traditional scholar Salah al-Din al-'Ala'i characterized the collection as containing abundant scholarly benefits and elevated chains (asānīd ‘āliyah), noting that it represented the most elevated narrations transmitted from the Egyptian traditionists of that period .

Derivative Works and Editions

Several derivative selections and thematic extracts were produced from the text:

  • A hundred selected hadiths (al-Mi’ah al-Muntaqat) were compiled as a standalone abridgment .
  • A collection of parallel narrations (muwafaqat) from al-Khila‘iyyat was extracted by Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Zahiri .
  • An extraction of the hadiths of Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah was also drawn from the work .

The book has been edited by Salih al-Lahham and published jointly by al-Dar al-‘Uthmaniyyah in Jordan and Mu’assasat al-Rayyan in Beirut in 1431 AH / 2010 CE . Parts 1 to 10 were also prepared as a doctoral dissertation at the Islamic University of Madinah by Dr. Ali al-Nahari .
